Weekly Theme: Audio Books…Thanksgiving
Saturday, December 2nd, 2006Thanksgiving is a time to offer thanks, of family gatherings and holiday meals. In the United Kingdom, Thanksgiving is another name for the Harvest festival, held in churches across the land to mark the end of the local harvest. This tradition was taken to North America by the early settlers, most notably the pilgrims who sailed on the Mayflower and settled in Plymouth, Massachusetts.
In 1621, the pilgrims and Wampanoag Indians celebrated the harvest festival in autumn. It is also associated with a time of turkeys, cranberries, corn, stuffing and pumpkin pie. Even though cooking methods have evolved, the meal is still consumed today with the same spirit of celebration and over-indulgence.
