Weekly Theme: Audio Books…In Celebration of Diwali

Wednesday, October 25th, 2006

We have selected six audio books in celebration of Diwali!

Diwali or Deepavali is a major Indian festival celebrated with fireworks for 5 days. It is also known as the Festival of Lights where people light divas or oil lamps around their houses as a sign of celebration. Most courtyards and walls of Indian houses are decorated with multi-coloured rangoli using the powder of white stone, lime, rice flour and other paste to draw intricate patterns.

Diwali symbolises the victory of good over evil and is rooted in the mythological epic of Ramayana’s homecoming to Ayodhay after the defeat of Ravana. The festival also honours Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth and Kali, the goddess of strength. It signifies the renewal of life and prayers are offered. People wear new clothes and exchange gifts on the day of the festival.

Agatha Christie, born 15 Sep 1890 - 12 Jan 1976

Agatha Miller, better known as Agatha Christie, was born on 15 September 1890 in Torquay, England. In 1914, The Queen of Crime married Colonel Archibald Christie, an aviator in the Royal Flying Corps and they had one daughter, Rosalind, before their divorce in 1928.

The Agatha Christie Week is back, from 10 – 16 September 2006. This year we’re celebrating the 80th Anniversary of The Murder of Roger Ackroyd, Christie’s first blockbuster success. The Mousetrap is her most successful and longest running play since its premier in London in 1952. Some of her famous detectives include Miss Jane Marple, Hercule Poirot, Tommy & Tuppence, Parker Pyne, Ariadne Oliver and Harley Quin.

Agatha Christie also wrote six romantic novels under the pseudonym Mary Westmacott, Agatha Christie an Autobiography and an entertaining account of the many archaeological expeditions she shared with her second husband, Sir Max Mallowan. In 1971, she achieved her country’s highest honor when she received the Order of Dame Commander of the British Empire.
