Highly readable personal and business reflections April 23, 2008 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
This book seems to give a "warts and all" view of Branson's start in business ventures, his early escapades and narrow escapes and his subsequent successes. From one-time album importer to multi-millionaire, multi-business owner, this review touches on his feelings and beliefs as well as his ways of making personal and business success.
I picked up the book when I was working at Virgin Holidays, and actually expected little from it. But I found the style and personal history fascinating ... at least initially. The book drifts midway, going into some self-justification over BA vs Virgin, and a little too much of the ballooning adventures, but opens up fascinating accounts of helping evacuate hostages from Iraq in the first Gulf war. The clash of old bureaucratic business vs the Virgin style is exemplified! Definitely worth the investment, and 4 stars from me.
Brilliant book from a outstanding guy! January 4, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
A very pleasant read with loads of funny stories and inside of the man behind Virgin. It is clear that he came from a priviledged background! not money wise but having wonderful, loving, supportive and warm parents. It's sometimes hard to believe the stories of his parents but it would account for his success in personal and business endeavors. His parents gave him unconditional love and support and that is what "gave" him a great foundation to start with. It gave me another boost to believe that anything is possible for anybody in this world, you do have to work for it! Most people are too lazy and not do what he has done to get where he is now. Again a brilliant book from a great person! very inspiring, very motivating and funny!
A Good Book, But Not The Best In It's League. October 24, 2007 Very candid account, with a good sence of humour. However I was rather disappointed to read all the tricks of the trade, so it left somewhat unpleasant after-taste. Whatever, the guy is a billionaire! A great writer - ??
Inspirational Read July 20, 2007 A very well written book. A great read giving an account of how Richard Branson made his millions. It is interesting to know about the problems with BA.
After reading this book, I have more confidence in Virgin as I did previously.
A great read!
Missing pieces! May 11, 2007 6 out of 9 found this review helpful
I have wanted to read this book for some time, and having finally done so I can say that it is indeed an interesting and enjoyable read. However I for one bought the book looking to get more of an insight into the man rather than an overly exaustive review of the whole BA dirty tricks affair. I would like to have known more about how he felt making the money he was making, how he felt when he realised for the first time he had made a million etc. At one point he reflects on the fact that he has just been valued at 1.5bn - but does not comment any further. Whilst I'm sure this is partly attributable to his sense of modesty, I for one would love to be that wealthy and would like to know how it feels!
