Best Series Ever!!! July 6, 2007 4 out of 7 found this review helpful
If anyone has not yet read through the Harry Potter series, they really should. Rowling's immagination streches the readers mind and strings together witty scenes includiong magical beings or situations. You get so absorbed to the book you observerve spells and broomsticks as perfectly normal and no longer feel like a, as Rowling describes, Muggle. The quality of writing is sometimes so convincing that it is clear that Rowling attendends a magical boarding school herself, I would know seeing as I am 16 and go to a boarding school. Keep the writing up Rowling!!!!
Harry's 6th adventure on CD - well worth the money! May 24, 2007 16 out of 21 found this review helpful
I have always been a Harry Potter fanatic, owning all of the books, films, and audio recordings (1-4 on tape and 5 & 6 on CD). I'm not going to go into the storyline, as many other reviewers have already done so. I'm just going to comment on the product itself.
Just in case you're wondering, this isn't abridged; it's the full story (all 17 CDs of it!), and Stephen Fry does it justice. Although he does all of the voices, characters etc., he is wonderfully expressive, and not once during a listening have I felt bored by his "rendition".
If you're looking at this CD boxset, the chances are you've already read the book, and are looking to buy the CD as an "added bonus". It is definitely worth the measly 40 it is being sold for. The story is good in itself, and Fry retells it brilliantly, "capturing the magic..."
Highly recommended!
Heartbreaker March 18, 2007 9 out of 18 found this review helpful
I should advise that any slightly emotional person out there better have their Kleenex ready... Rowling has built up Harry so much and it all seems to be for the climax of this book, which leaves me desperate for the last installment. When THAT happens (I won't ruin the suprise, but I'm sure you know what im talking about), I felt my heart cry out just as Harry's must have done. Any person who doesn't feel the tearjerker is a machine. Rowling, you are an artist. Read this, no doubt about it, this series is going down in history just as the Lord of the Rings and etc. have done in the past
Best book so far February 15, 2007 9 out of 16 found this review helpful
The 6th book in the series is darker and more mature than the ones preceeding it. But then, Harry has seen Sirius die, and has because of it, and the prophecy; realised that his destiny lies in fighting the Dark Lord. There is much more subtlty in this book, and Snape's behaviour finally seems to prove what Harry said all along. And yet, we are also told that Dumbledore knew what was going on, and that he trusted Snape. So perhaps, the book's ending merely leads one to the wrong conclusion ... and all will be revealed in the final installment.
I enjoyed the sessions that Harry has with Dumbledore because they provide extremely important insights on Tom Riddle's weaknesses. Understanding and using these are going to be vital to Harry if he is to defeat Voldermort. But more important is the lesson that Dumbledore teaches Harry about love, loyalty and friendship. Harry proves that he is Dumbledore's man through and through.
A fabulous read if you enjoy subtlty, intrigue and suspense. This book is not meant for those who can't see beyond the written word. But if you read between the lines and think deeply about what takes place, it will provide many clues to what is to follow in book 7. The humour is subtle in some places, and the light touches of suspence, romance and friendship make it a gripping read.
almost but not quite February 13, 2007 4 out of 21 found this review helpful
After her rather dissaisfyingly written fifth volume, Ms Rowling apparently felt the need to reconsider her writing.
This sixth episode closely recalls the second one: once again she uses a fairy tale approach, rich in descriptions of everyday magical life at school to tell a gloom story of death and insanity. It worked very well in the Chamber of Secrets but does not really work here: the story holds of course, Hogwarts is alive and keeps the reader's imagination alive too, but the plot is lacking in suspence and even, strange to say, in her author's usual sense of humour.
I could not really worry about Malfoy's machinations nor could I really relate with the characters' love troubles because they never really came to life to me; a sort of detachment filters through the lines as if Ms Rowling were a little tired of her novels.
The whole conclusion, soon after the final battle, felt rhetorical and unconvincing, not to mention the fact that it is hard to understand how Harry keeps on surviving deadly foes being after all an average wizard.
I really hope the soon to be published seventh book will make up for all these flaws so that we shall not have to complain about an excellent story gone to waste.
