5 out of 5 stars Get weird looks on the train   August 21, 2007

I can promise you three things.
You will laugh.
You will want to go to Ireland.
You will want to do the same thing.

This book is amazing.
I usually don't read travel novels but this time I couldn't put it down.
After recognising his name from Morris Minor And The Majors (a gimmick band in the 80s I think) I bought the book that quickly turned into the book I re-read when I need cheering up.
Every chapter, ever moment, every time someone sights him with the fridge is a superb moment of comedy.
You feel for Tony and you want him to succeed, even though the fridge costed more than the bet.

Yes, you will laugh, your sides may well ache, and yes, you will read it again.
I only with I could give it six stars, or ten. Damn funny

5 out of 5 stars Excellent, funny book   August 1, 2007

This was the first of Tony Hawks's books that I had read, and certainly won't be the last. A bizzarre challenge which is not only funny but also shows the generous nature of the Irish. The Irish Tourist Board should at it to their list of suggested reading as it certainly made me want to visit the country again.
Very entertaining. Very worthwhile read.

4 out of 5 stars Perfect for perpetuating my romatically quirky view of Ireland   June 9, 2007

Humour the way the Irish do it - drole, quirky and with a calm acceptance of the bizarre - finely illustrated.

Did do some - mouth full of tea - blast laughs which is always a good sign.

At worst you'd be tickled!

4 out of 5 stars You are in no danger of dying laughing, but you will certainly enjoy this book.   February 25, 2007

Many books are said to be `laugh out loud funny'. We have all read the inner sleeve reviews, along the lines of `not to be read in a public place'. This is another one of those books. However having read a book or two in my time I am not so quick to believe everything I read on the inner cover. I was therefore prepared for the book to be an amusing and pleasant read, about an unusual travel idea around a country that I am a little familiar with. This is exactly what it turned out to be. It is not side splittingly funny. You are quite safe in reading it on the bus or in the park. However, it is certainly worth reading. Tony Hawks comes across as a likeable person with a gift for making his life interesting and producing a good book in the process. His escapades are amusing, but more than that they are charming and quite down to earth. He meets interesting and friendly people, and as a consequence makes us all want to visit Ireland, with or without a fridge. He does not go overboard with his escapades and this makes the book feel real and all the more enjoyable. There seems to me to be no exaggeration, there seems only to be honest and real fun with real people. This is what I liked about the book. It was everything I expected it to be. As long as you don't expect too much you will surely enjoy it, so you will.

5 out of 5 stars Hilarious   February 24, 2007

I've not read anything this funny in a while. Tony manages to tell the story of his travels around Ireland whilst being extremely witty and funny at the same time. I know it is a cliche, but this book really will have you laughing out loud, the passengers on my train will testify to that! A great read.
