Could watching paint dry be more interesting? September 2, 2008 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
I didn't read the reviews before buying this book - I wish I had. I rarely give-up on a book but with this tedious tome, I called it a day half-way through. No wonder there are over 450 used copies of this for sale through Amazon. Do something more interesting - have a look at some paint drying.....
History - bought to life!!! August 17, 2008 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
Fabulous book, do'nt like stories of vampires generally, but this one was brilliant. Have recommended to all my friends, also glad to see they're going to make a film of it in 2010,but hope they don't mess about with it and stick closely to the book, could be really interesting.
Don't bother August 10, 2008 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
Like many of the people above I found this very dissapointing, I expected much more from this book. 50% interesting & promising, 50% predictable and boring. Its a shame as the premis for the story is great but there are long periods where nothing happens and you quickly loose any suspense that the author had carfully built up. There are also many parts of the story that are completely unbelievable. I really struggled to finish it hoping it would all be worth it in the end....it wasn't.
Engaging vampire story. August 5, 2008 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
Elizabeth Kostova creates in 'The Historian' an atmosphere of vampire, gothic horror that seeps through the very walls of your own house and ensures your own commitment to the chase that is written about in such detail. You might also feel that you need the story to be solved to confirm your own sanity as the fear builds with each and every turn of the page. I enjoyed getting friendly with each of the characters in the book and appreciated the journey that Kostova took me on around the cities of Europe, especially Istanbul, whilst always feeling that an icy hand was about to reach out for my throat and press gang me into the army of Dracula's living dead. A real lights on kind of read that thrills and enlightens in equal measure.
Absolutely Fantastic! July 23, 2008 4 out of 5 found this review helpful
This book took me a long time to read for two reasons:
1. I couldn't read it at night as the imagery was so vivid I was a little freaked out. 2. I left it lying around and my housemate picked it up and was so hooked I "lost" it for a week.
I picked up The Historian at the airport and by the time I got off the plane I was completely lost in this fascinating world that Kostova creates. Her descriptions of places, people and feelings totally immerse the reader. The book has been described as pretentious by a previous reviewer, if using a varied and at times complicated vocabulary is pretentious then yes it is but I find this only adds to the depth of descriptive pose. Frankly I found the use of sophisticated language a breath of fresh air amid the need to make a book an 'easy read' at the cost of good writing. If you liked the Da Vinci Codes soap opera style of writing this won't be for you.
Clearly well researched she truely captures that alluring presence of Dracular and his power and avoids the trap of predictability (apart from the last few chapters, the events are predictable yet the way they unfold are not). The characters are richly depicted and one can't help but empathise with the heroine.
There seem to be a great deal of negative reviews on this site which I honestly don't understand, I have lent this book out to scores of friends and not one bad word yet. I honestly believe it to be one of the best books I have read in years.
