Anything Goes, and much more June 21, 2008 Funny, touching, naughty and nice. A frank and compeling read. Had trouble putting it down. Inspiring and enticing
THE SECOND TIME AROUND May 25, 2008 2 out of 4 found this review helpful
John Barrowman first 'entered' my life when I was asked by a guy who had bought my novel, 'Ghostly Gay Trilogy', who I would pick to play the main character (Ashley Wynter) if it was ever filmed. I smiled and said that "John Barrowman would be ideal if he had a crash course in learning the 'Wiltshire dialect'". Since reading his autobiography, I am not sure now whether this was said in haste or, on reflection, he would be right for the part!
I found the book entertaining in the usual showbiz tradition and at least there were no slagging off about fellow performers. The Valentino episode in which he regards himself as 'beautiful', plus the fact that he also knows that he has talent made me instantly think of the quote 'self-praise is no recommendation'. But you do have to be confident in today's entertainment world, especially in the cut-throat TV of talent shows and the monotonous reprise of 'finding a star' for bygone musicals.
I congratulate him on coming out and the events that followed and I wish him and Scott Gill every happiness now, and in both their careers.
I thought the ending of the book gave way for perhaps a second volume and I am sure that will happen and I think I will wait until then as, who knows, things can be better 'the second time around'!
A Must Read! May 22, 2008 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
Simply gorgeous! John Barrowman is charming, witty, honest and fantastically entertaining. One of the (many) things which makes this book a must read is John's unfailing honesty in every chapter. Unlike so many other autobiographies, I never read a false word. Rarely does a non fiction book make me laugh or cry, but this did both, many times. My all time favourite!
fAnything Goes- fantastic! May 15, 2008 3 out of 5 found this review helpful
This book had me laughing out loud and crying too. John is very open about his life so far and Carole has done a fantastic job pulling all his memoirs together. He writes from the heart and it shows. The love he has for his family and the sheer determination he has shown in following his dream shines through. His life hasn't all been a bed of roses. I found it a very entertaining and yet emotional read . John is certainly an entertainer in every way.
Candid and very well written April 20, 2008 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
He is good and he knows it!!
No, really John Barrowman has been there done that and got more than one T-Shirt in the bargain. He pops up now on the British TV talent contests so much it made me wonder why, or what makes him eligible to stand and judge the contestants? OK, we have all seen him on Torchwood and Dr. Who, and I appreciate he is talented - but how so....
This Autobiography from a reasonably young chap is chock full of fasinating stories about his life from tales of infancy from his family (who are as nuts as he is) to his 'to this day' tales of acting and life for John Barrowman in the 21st Century.
The footnotes that accompany nearly every page are witty and want you to carry on to find out more, as they sometimes tease with promises of enlightenment later in the book.
There were no low points or boring bits to skip in this tale and I read it in 24 hours!!
Oh!! and what qualifies him to be able to judge the contestants on talent shows? Look at the 'time-line' at the back of the book to find out. It blew my socks off.
