When someone of Fred's age puts a biography out then warning bells do go off. What has he really done so far that he can write a book of any substance about? Surely as soon as it is in print then it will be out of date (i.e. Freddy being captain of the Indian tour)??These are certainly fair comments, but overall the book is OK. What you get is chit chat and personal observations from the games that he has been involved in. Little name checks and locker room stories abound, plus his own take on the various matches he's been in. It's typical of the young sportspersons biog to be honest. It is entertaining, and easy to read, but it is only skin deep, lacking the depth of any hindsight. What you don't get with this is detailed analysis of his early life and the way that it has shaped him. Or his deepest thoughts on life and cricket. Or any really clinical editing because every page is needed to make the thing credibly large enough. The guy is a real character though and has been firmly involved with the current revival of English cricket, so I'd conclude that the book is definately worth reading providing you take it at face value and don't look to find something in it that just isn't there.
OK book February 9, 2006 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This book is an OK read and fairly interesting. However, it does just feel like an over-view of freds life thus far. It rarely delves deeply into any subject and when aired, freds opinions do not really give much away about what he was/is really thinking. It reads like a list of facts of "what I did" rather than having any passion or excitement in it. Worth a look if you are interested in freds rise to fame, but it lacks the passion seen from fred on the pitch. Not one of the better cricket books out there
Very run of the mill January 24, 2006 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
There are 2 types of sports autobiography. Those that are a little different, bringing new insight to the game, offering amusing anecedotes and raising questions. Unfortunately there are also those that run through the author's life without deviating from a set line - "felt good batting, scored a quick fifty but unlucky to hole out at deep mid on, looking forward to next game after a rest with the family..." and Being Freedie falls into that category. I am a great admirer of Fred both as a person and as a player but his autobiography was extremely disappointing. I was expecting more than a standard chronological recital of his life so far.
An entertaining read November 18, 2005 11 out of 14 found this review helpful
This is a book any cricket fan will enjoy, or indeed any person wanting to know more about Flintoff.Flintoff takes the reader from his school days through to the end of the Ashes summer of 2005. He doesn't hold back much, and describes all the highs and lows of his career, and how he felt about certain situations on and off the field, including his thoughts and experiences with other top players. There is plenty of humour to be found as well, making the book entertaining from the start to finish. There are lots and LOTS of photos throughout the book, spanning his life so far. A really good read!
Being Freddie review October 26, 2005 4 out of 8 found this review helpful
A very informative book with all the details on Freddie's life from wannabee to star. I like the photos in the book aswell as they are colourful and make the book yet more interesting. Freddie tells it like it is and also details the Ashes game by game. A top read and I recommend it to anyone. I read the book in 8 days, I culd hardly pu it down!
