Boring September 9, 2007 0 out of 3 found this review helpful
I have read all of Martina Coles books and this one was just the same as all the rest and to be honest i'm getting bored of reading about the same thing from her. The amount of swearing was over the top even for her. I have lived most of my life around the areas that the book is set in and I never met anybody like the people in this book. Men who are violent, sleeping around, everybodys scared of them, killing and maiming and even the police are scared of them! Far too ott and not really much of a storyline. Probably won't be reading one of her books again.
What a good read.. August 11, 2007 I love Martina's books and this one did not let me down.. It begins with the release of Frankie from prison and right away you can tell what kind of character he is..incorrigible...with no regard for his wife or anyone..egocentric..you dislike him right away. His longsuffering,'lush' wife Jackie awaits his return eargerly..Why is she so crazy about this guy?...He is hardly a good husband!
Frankie wants to get back to 'work' but soon learns that his golden crown has tarnished a bit since he has been away and that there is fresh, young talent ready to step into his shoes..that person is his favorite nephew...
There are some great characters in this book; Maggie..the lovely, intelligent and honourable..trying to break the mould in which she was made..
A good read indeed...If you like Martina cole books then you will not be disappointed..
Fast and Furious April 28, 2007 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
Martina is in my opinion the best female crime writer in the business. She is to gangland thrillers what Joan Collins is to naughty novels - the Number One diva. This is a page-turner that should be a movie.
Major MAJOR let down! :-( April 12, 2007 1 out of 4 found this review helpful
Let me make one thing very clear - I love Martina Cole. I have her entire collection of books. But I LOATHE this book. I skimmed through a great deal of it, and I normally devour and savour each Martina Cole book and never want them to end and often re read them. It was like she was on auto pilot when she was writing this book - very blah blah blah yeah yeah whatever - churning it out because she had to meet the quota for her publishing contract. At least, that's how it seems. It was dull and extremely repetative. I know she tends to repeat certain words and phrases in most of her books quite frequently, and normally they do not bother me at all, but in this, it drove me mad! The characters had no depth and they held very little interest and the story line was incredibly weak. I have to admit it got that bad in places the book was thrown across the room more than once.
I never normally get into this whole "review" thing either, and (please pardon the terrible pun about to be written!) I NEVER judge a book by its cover, so to speak. But this book had me so wound up by then end of it I had to get all of the above off my chest.
Rant over.
Absolutely gutted / disppointed! April 10, 2007 3 out of 6 found this review helpful
