 I would have expected better August 27, 2008
Sound quality on this unit is good, DAB and FM work fine. But as for internet radio. The portal Roberts has chosen is simply dreadful. Its clunky, awful to navigate and most importantly it does not carry the full range of BBC Listen again shows which is why I bought the radio. What a dreadful mistake. Controls on the radio also look like they were designed in Poland. And can Roberts tell me why there is a snooze function on this radio but no way of dimming or witching off the amazingly bright LCD display. If you try to listen to this in a dark room it is like laying next to the Eddystone lighthouse. When I wrote to Roberts asking them why thisomission they said " It was not designed as a bedside radio." Then why put a sleep function on it then goons? Thoughtless and careless. The new Pure stream radio looks a much better bet because Pure do things properly not , sad to say, like Roberts these days. This is my second naff Roberts radio purchase in the last few months and it will be my last.

I was a bit worried when I bought this, as it involves hooking it up to a computer network to get it to work. The advert says this is easy. "Yeah, right", I thought. Experience teaches that getting bits of computer equipment to talk to each other in the way they are supposed to is seldom something that "just works".
However, I was pleasantly surprised with this nifty little bit of kit. I plugged it in, and it just worked. Easy as that. Seriously. I was amazed. I was using a wired ethernet connection, so I can't speak for the wireless capabilities, but I had no trouble at all getting it to find the internet and music files on my network.
The usability isn't bad, and the interface is pretty intuitive, but I think this is a "could do better" area. If you're playing music files from a shared folder, rather than a media server (and, incidentally, it is a very useful feature that you can play music from shared folders, as it means you can play music from a network attached hard drive, and don't need to leave your computer switched on: a lot of other network music players don't have this feature), then you probably need to go through a few levels of folders to find the one where your music is stored. It would be nice if you could set it to remember this location, but you can't. You have to start browsing at the very top level of your home network each time you use the device. Maybe connecting it to a media server works better: I haven't tried that yet.
Some obvious features seem to be missing. Other reviewers have commented on the lack of a pause feature when playing podcasts (although you can pause mp3s). I was surprised you can't play tracks within a folder in a random order. I had a CD player nearly 20 years ago that could do this, so I don't think it's exactly cutting edge technology.
The sound quality is OK, but not brilliant. To be fair, you probably can't expect much better from a device this size with internal speakers. There are no crackles on the radio or anything like that, but I just feel it lacks good hi-fi quality.
I found the DAB reception to be of good quality, but given one of the other reviews here it probably depends on how good the reception is in your area. However, if you have good reception, then you'll listen to DAB radio in good quality.
Despite some minor shortcomings, I'm very pleased with my purchase. The ease of getting it to work is a real plus, and it does have a very useful collection of features. What I wanted was to be able to listen to music stored on my home network, and not necessarily on a PC, and to be able to listen to the radio, all in one reasonably unobtrusively sized device. It meets those requirements very nicely.
 Easy to use but why no Pause, Fast Forward or Rewind on podcasts? August 13, 2008

I was initially delighted with this radio. It is extremely easy to use, and in this sense it knocks spots of the others I've looked at. Buttons are large and intuitive, the screen is clear and the scroll wheel makes use very, very simple. The sound is clear although light on bass, and I have found the signal strength for DAB much better than on my earlier Revo Pico.
However, there is one niggly problem that I find extremely frustrating. I bought the radio to listen mainly to the BBC Listen Again programmes, and for some reason there is no way to pause a programme once it has started, or move forwards or backwards within it. Some other models do have it (the Tangent Quattro being one apparently) and I have no idea why Roberts haven't included it. A tedious frustration with what is otherwise by far the most intuitive internet radio I've come across.

Since I bought this last week I found it very easy indeed to setup the internet radio section and esp love the idea of going to a web site and registering the radio so you can add all your fave stations and catorise them in any order folder gene etc great stuff and because their is so many stations out there you need it too. The Dab is also a piece of cake to setup and of course the FM as far as pre sets, Alarms (it has 2) etc. The reception in my area Huddersfield is excellent even with the ariel down a bit and not fully up. This is also the case with FM too. However the Media player which works alongside the windows OS Media player 11 is another story, its a big let down it only picks up some of the files on your PC and not ALL of them so if you have a big collection like me (50 Gig) your in for a shock it will only pick up a few of them. Reading other reviews of Roberts Internet Radios seems to be the same problem. Its a real pain in the butt as well to set up a complete nightware infact and that's coming from a qualified PC engineer. I am awaiting to hear back from Tech support to see if they can fix this problem and I will report back if their is a solution to the problem. The speakers too are a bit thin on the ground hardly any bass. However I have found out that the best way to deal with that is to plug it into my hifi system using the headphone output at the back of the Radio which makes a big difference to the sound. It works off batteries too so if you want to sit in the garden etc move about with it its good for that but the sound quality from the speakers is a bit of a let down. For 150 though its not bad I just hope they can fix the media player problem soon.Right to bring you all upto date on this problem found out it was Microsofts Media player thats the problem so I am now using the excellent J.River Media player it only costs 20 and worth every penny AND it works with the roberts radio and the program is very easy to setup indeed only took one click in fact and I had ALL my 50 gig plus mp3 collection rocking on my radio unlike microsofts crappy media player. J.River media player is the best media centre I've used for playing all sorts of media. So as the Roberts radio wasen't the fault in the end I now give it four stars.

This radio will do 4 basic things:-
1. DAB radio
2. Internet Radio streaming and podcast playing.
3. Streaming from a computer.
4. FM radio
DAB and FM are fairly standard and I won't cover them here.
2a. Internet Radio Streaming.
Once connected to your network you can search amongst the many thousands of radio stations. However, this is mostly only useful from a 'sampling' viewpoint or if you are channel hopping. Once you know what radio stations you mostly want to listen to you go to a designated web site and set up your favourite stations from there. To 'pair' up with the web site just follow the simple instructions in the user manual.
BBC listen again works very well. So, if you miss the ommnibus edition of 'The Archers', on a Sunday morning, you'll have no trouble listening to it at your leisure on this radio. There are also presets, in addition to the favourites, list to access your favourite stations.
2b.Podcast playing.
Podcast favourites can be set up in a similar way to favourite stations.
However, here is one very NEGATIVE thing I have to say about this radio. There is NO WAY OF PAUSING the playback of a podcast. Wow is this an oversight. In my opinion a pausing facility is very important (see later about how to get round this problem). I'd even like to have fast forward and reverse. I've been used to that when listening to podcasts on my Nokia phone - albeit that the phone doesn't do it very well.
However, if you aren't going to be interrupted, whilst listening to your podcasts then there is no problem and you'll find very easy access to them via the clear display.
3. Streaming from a computer
This is where you can access the MP3s, stored on your computer. I use it for streaming podcasts because streams from a computer can be paused !!
Even better, I have a Linux based computer for MythTV. I use an application called 'MyPodder' from http://www.podcastready.com. There is a windows version also. The great thing about this application is that once you have it set up, with your favourite podcasts, it can be set to download them at regular times - say, every 3 hours to make a check. This does mean having your computer switched on of course.
Linking up the WiFi.
I found that, like most wizards, the 'wizard' didn't work. However, I found that the manual set up was no problem. So, that covers Internet/podcast streaming.
If, like my Linux computer, a username and password is required for access, this can be set up on the radio so that login is automatic.
On Linux I used Samba to share files and, just as it would share with windows, it will share with this radio. The MythTV listings can be seen on the radio as well so you can see what TV programmes you've recorded.

If, like me, you think there should be a pause facility on the podcasts then I'd encourage you to send an email to Roberts suggesting it as a firmware update. If a few people write they might take notice.
I've still given this radio 5 stars because it is amazing!
When in a fixed position I connect the radio, via its headphone socket, to my HiFi amplifier and the sound is excellent!
