Product Description Powerful 18x Optical Zoom, 28mm wide-angle Leica DC VARIO-ELMARIT lens and unique Intelligent Auto Mode. The perfect choice for any photographer with varied photographic needs and high ambitions - Panasonic is pleased to introduce the new DMC-FZ18 8.1-megapixel Lumix camera, featuring a powerful 18x optical zoom (equivalent to 28-504mm on a 35mm film camera), newly developed 28mm wide-angle LEICA DC VARIO-ELMARIT lens and Panasonic's new and unique Intelligent Auto Mode. Panasonic's award winning FZ series of Lumix cameras has been highly praised across the world, for concomitant realisation of both high performance and ease of use, and the FZ18 is no exception. Bridging the gap between high-end compacts and digital SLRs, Panasonic's DMC-FZ18 offers a level of control close to that of an SLR, but without the need for interchangeable lenses. Perfect for photographers on the move and families who want to shoot pictures outdoors for example, the FZ18 offers an easy way to enjoy the fun of capturing beautiful digital pictures.

Top Notch November 21, 2008 Bought this camera earlier this year before i went to San Francisco. I used to have a Sony Cybershot with just a 3x zoom and this camera is still fine i just wanted something with a big zoom that wasn't too complicated and that i could literally just turn it on and start snapping away. This camera is it! i looked at the Fuji and Olympus big zoom cameras but kept coming back to this one. The IA mode is brilliant as i can just leave it on that mode and it knows what its doing and the 18x Zoom was just what i wanted for those better shots. I now have a great set of photos from San Francisco. Most Recommended!
Perfect! November 10, 2008 I was playing with the idea of getting an SLR camera but was very confused about what made them so special and so expensive. Small compacts have the same pixel size so why not get an expensive one of those I thought? I took the plunge and chose this camera as I'd used my friend's one when we were away for the weekend and I got addicted to the sound of the shutter clicking away. (I don't think it's the actual shutter you hear but a digital sound, still....) This camera is a bridge camera - a bridge between a compact and an SLR. I think it's as good as an SLR but without all the complicated instuctions. The instructional booklet for this camera is pretty hefty but has an A.i function that enables you to take photos straight away. I did sit down and read it all through and was amazed at what I learnt in such a small space of time, it is worth reading as this camera cando so much - so why not take advantage of it? It has a scene mode to help pick the right settings (aperture, shutter speed etc.) for many situations such as beach, starry sky, pet photos and so many more. I was able to pick it up and start taking amazing photos, it was easy and very satisfying. It is especially good for taking macro photos - stones, sand at the beach, water and flowers. I took some photos of the sky the morning after I got the camera and was amazed at the light it picked up and the clarity of the photos. The detail you can get out of photos is very impressive,I tried taking close ups of orchids and the camera picked up details I hadn't even noticed. I love this camera and would recommend it to anyone who wants to start taking photos that are a little bit special. It feels like a professional camera, looks impressive, has an incredible zoom and takes breathtaking shots.
Great camera, shame about transfering problem November 8, 2008 I bought this camera almost a year ago and have found it almost miraculous in the way it can produce excellent photos in difficult conditions. However, I have not been able to link up to my Vista laptop to download my pictures. The driver on the CD is not recognised. Fortunately I have another camera which uses the same SD card and I have worked around this problem by swopping the cards and downloading from the other camera. I have searched the internet for a suitable driver for Vista, but haven't been able to find one. If you run on Vista, just be aware that this might be a problem for you too.
Worse camera I have had. October 2, 2008 1 out of 5 found this review helpful
Bought the Panasonic DMC-FZ18 6 months ago for my forth coming cruise as I wanted a good zoom. But to start with I compared the photos with my little Sony Cybershot and the Sony was by far the best and to make matters worse the LCD has gone blurred I cant take photos unless I turn it off and on several times before it gets clear. even the Intelligent Auto does not seem to stop the shake and even worse I have mislaid the receipt so cant send it back for repairs but the latter was my fault I didnt think it would break so I am back to using my trustworthy 5 year old Sony Cybershot.
excellent September 12, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
The FZ18 has to be the best spent money. Crystal clear pictures & the camera does what it says, everything works well. The IA mode is foolproof & have been so impressed with outcome of photos. It is straight forward in this mode but can be programmmed to make it as complicated as you want it to be. Best spent money for ages.
