Arrived unwrapped March 7, 2010 Mrs. Joycelyn Watson (Isle of Man) I bought this for a friend's birthday and was disappointed that it arrived without the sealed wrap. I am hoping that the cd was not damaged at all. Also I would have preferred to have received it intact especially as it was a for a gift.
Overhyped reality tv singer singing synthetic muzak January 13, 2010 Mr. G. Yeloff (London uk) As a classically trained musician (who plays pop too so no snob)I was honestly surprised how substandard this was. This album is not only badly sung-it is also really banal slush.
Regardless of the Potts 'sensation',the music itself is this unfortunately currently trendy 'crossover' ie. banal euromush muzak with overreverberant voice(which still does'nt cover up the huge lack of technique) and synthetic strings. His use of Chopin 3rd etude in E which I play(Tristesse)is just unacceptable-poor Chopin should sue! Why all this Italian(when the bad pronounciation is so english)!? It's all so pseudo-classy but its actually just cheap and synthetic.Shooting his videos in opera houses and singing in Italian does NOT make him any good ,or convince any informed people he is actually an opera singer.Has no-one noticed his pitching is often out? This is really worse than I thought.Bocelli is actually much better if you have to compare euromush 'crossover' singers.
Why do his fans compare this guy to ANY pro opera singer?? He has NEVER sung professionally in one opera. It's not just that-it just sounds frankly amateur(no disrespect to amateurs)with poor technique, even when he does popular stuff.Comparing him to Domingo,Pav,Villazon,Florez etc is..well..totally misinformed to be polite.
This is not surprising as UK television(unlike Europe) is nearly all cultureless cheap reality tv junk now.In an age where TV is all-powerful there is nearly no Classical on UK tv. So when a nice phone salesman comes on BGT singing(what a surprise) Nessun Dorma many think it is amazing. It's reality tv gone mad.In Europe Classical/Opera is on popular tv all the time.
If you don't believe me about Potts, type in Youtube Florez doing 'mes amis Paris','arias for rubini','donna mobile'. Then Alagna do 'E Lucevan'.Different planet.
Paul Potts December 25, 2009 Mr. John Hann 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
Excellent. My wife and I heard the CD on a recent flight to the UK and I continually played the CD. When we arrived back home, I ordered the CD through Amazon and I often play it at home and in the car.
Wonderful Potted Potts December 11, 2009 A Nobody (UK) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
Having been astonished at witnessing this unassuming gentleman's beautiful singing voice seeming to have come from nowhere when first heard nationally on Britain's Got Talent, and, much later, at reading the strength of the reviews here thus far I have ordered both of Paul's CD's on Amazon without a second thought.
The snobbery that has been extended from certain existing classical quarters deriding Paul's arrival on their turf may be dismissed as commercial envy. It's understandable. Put yourself in their place constantly busting a gut all those years to get to where they've got! And, along comes this common untrained bloke called Paul Potts to spoil it all.
Paul is a natural with a God given voice who, undoubtedly, has a lot of hard work ahead to hone his musical nouse. His unfaltering ability to hold phrases and reach high ranges as far as I am (I think) a discerning and willing listener may comment upon, I say, is pure and unforced, unlike 'the singing professionals' who look to burst a blood vessel every time they have a go at their red-faced operatic highs.
Paul, certainly, supplies the vital "tingle factor" which indicates, to me, I am hearing something very special.
I look forward to his being able to explore his repertoire away from merely commercial Italianate tracks they all warble by way of an easy crust.
There are some delightful jaunty English ballads and folk songs 'on old song sheets' out there that I would relish hearing Paul having a go at just as, for example, Peter Peers did yonks ago.
Unfortunately, the cheap bought "new" disc I received has to be returned. It came across like an old scratchy vinyl record with jumps and other irritating miniscule musical blips throughout. This curtailed 'my tingle' considerably. But, that, definitely, wasn't Paul's fault.
Update: I later tried the CD in my car player and experienced no, hitherto, blips or scratches. It was, afterall, my laptop's inferior software player that delivered lousy sound...
The utmost tingle factor has now been restored so long as I listen in my car.
(I have to be very careful driving as I could, while playing my in-car Paul Potts CD through the M40 Chiltern Cutting where Red Kites wheel above road kill be pulled over by the Oxfordshire fuzz for appearing under the influence of an illegal substance.)
Even better than the first! November 2, 2009 R. van Staden (Johannesburg, South Africa) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
His debut was a great success! His follow-up even better!
The truth is that this album will probably not sell as many copies as his first did. However to me 'Passione' is miles ahead of his debut. Paul Potts delivers breathtaking vocals on an album lined with brilliant songs! Perhaps none of them with the presence of 'Nessun Dorma' but then again there is probably not another song like it.
Mr Potts proves that he can sustain his career as a top class vocalist. He's not just another winner of a 'reality show' that will disappear in a year. It's difficult to single out any songs on 'Passione' as they are all quite good. La Prima Volta, Un Giorno Per Moi and Piano stand out for me personally.
No we await Paul Potts' first visit to South Africa! (Hint)
