Ralph Vaughn Williams music is centred in the very heart of the English character. If you can experience the presents of England in the works then you have felt your home. And known the love for its great past without regreting its loss of greatness.

Being slow, it took me a while to work out that "collection" is a euphemism for "bits of", since all the works listed would not fit on one CD. It would be helpful if the "On this CD:" section clearly stated above the tracks "Excerpts from:" The music is splendid, but it should surely be called the "Penultimate Collection" as it's a taster for the full thing.

Vaughan Williams is to my mind not only one of the greatest of English composers, but one of the greatest composers ever. These collected pieces from his music include most of my favourite pieces.This CD is one that I have listened to on countless occassions. Pieces included such as
' The lark ascending' , ' Greensleaves ' and
' Thomas Tallis ' are touched with a spiritual, religious Englishness that evokes a sense of place and time that is rooted in the land and people. My favourite CD.

Well, perhaps not the greatest, but Ralph Vaughan Williams is certainly among the greats. There is no other way of describing what is compiled on this cd other than it's title, The Ultimate Collection. Whether you are an intense classical music lover, or you just like the atmosphere created by the disonance and perfect cadences, this cd is a must-have in your collection. These familar and perhaps not so familiar works suit any mood you may be in. Or perhaps you need some inspiration? This collection of Vaughan Williams' works may not be the best classical collection in comparison to those of other composers' works, but in it's own right, however, the emotion and finesse that carry through Vaughan William's works make this collection his ultimate collection, and most definately deserves 5 stars in it's own right. A must-have for your personal cd archive.
