Fido's account of the Yorkshire Ripper story is increadibly gripping. As a straightforward narritive it is as informative as most books on the subject - indeed, perhaps it is even more so. For as well as all the basic information about the murders and the bungled police operation, Fido embellishes the facts by recounting supposed conversations and exchanges that took place between the killer and his victims. This is both the tape's big strength and one weakness. In setting the scene and detailing the attacks so particularly, Fido paints an increadibly descriptive and frightening picture of the killings. And yet, if one is cynical, questions are raised about the accuracy of these accounts. Unless Fido has had access to, and drawn this information from Sutcliffe's own detailed confession, there is a suspicion that some of what Fido recalls constiutes merely artistic licence.In saying that however, Fido's account is totally believable and is autheticated by his own personal experiences in the area at the time. It is delivered in his own inimitable creepy delivery and accompanied by the sound of the occassional striking clocks. The result is a very atmospheric and, although slightly hammy, it is none the worse for that.
