"They're Starfleet - they don't give up!" April 19, 2008 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
The saga of classic Star Trek continues in the fourth hardback novel with Diane Carey's excellent `Best Destiny'. Written as a sequel to her previous entry `Final Frontier', this book is divided into two parallel plot lines, the first being set directly after the events of `Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country' and the second is set six years after the events chronicled in her previous book. In the first story line, as Kirk sets the Enterprise on a course for Earth to be decommissioned, they receive a distress call from the Excelsior Class ship Bill Of Rights which is followed by an antiproton flushback. The only occurrence of this happens when a warp drive explodes. Rushing to assist they discover the ship was on course for Faramond, an archaeological dig which makes Kirk think back to the first time he heard the name. This propels us into the main story in the novel which is set when Kirk was an arrogant, argumentative and resentful sixteen year old boy who hated his father and bucked authority every chance he got. His father George Kirk, working in Starfleet Security, tries to sort his son out and with the best of intentions gets him assigned to be part of the team that will go to Faramond. Helped by Captain April, George is thrilled when he realises that they'll get a chance to go on the Enterprise and hopes that his son will see that the Federation is doing an important job and that space is a thrilling and exciting place to be and that service in Starfleet is a great calling. Jim has other ideas. Still bruised from the events on Tarsus IV, he blames his father for everything and does his best to throw a proverbial bucket of cold water over anything the way only a teenager can. Things go from bad to worse when the shuttle carrying April, both Kirks, Florida, Hall and two scientists is attacked before they reach Faramond and they find themselves caught in a life or death battle with unknown assailants. The stories work well together, running to a conclusion that marries one into the other at exactly the right time. Carey brings back her characters that populated `Final Frontier' for another adventure and the characterisation and interplay is fantastically written. The parts between George and Jim are excellent and the story itself is essentially an examination of our favourite starship captain and the decisions that made him into the man we all came to know in the original series. Well paced, tight plotting, snappy dialogue, `Best Destiny' is better than her first novel (which is still excellent) and builds more of an unexplored era of classic Trek history. A must have book for any Trek library.
Best Destiny - It were rate gud January 16, 2004 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
This book was a New York Times Best Seller, and deserved to be. It's simply gorgeous. You learn why Kirk became the great Starship captain he became. You get to meet Captain Robert April, the first Enterprise 1701 captain, which is a bonus. But the thing is, it is written exquisitely, and as with most Diane Carey books, it is authentic to the degree that while you hold that book in your hands, it holds you in its own grip; you live the story. Fantastic.
The history behind Starfleet's Greatest Commander October 13, 1999 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Have you ever wondered how James T Kirk got to his destiny of Starship Captain? If you have then this is the book for you. Ths tells the story of a young James Kirk and his first voyage on the U.S.S. Enterprise that he would one day command. This book makes for a good read developing the young boy not really caring about space to the man who spent his life in the stars. I really enjoyed this book immensely and found it satisfying to know the full story behind James T Kirk. And of course we all know that James T Kirk was the best Star Trek Captain!!
