"She's an Empress all right George, the first of her kind." April 19, 2008 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
Titan continue their novels based on Classic Star Trek with their third Giant Novel: Final Frontier by Diane Carey. This book is set within two different time frames. The first for us is set just after the events of `The City On The Edge Of Forever' and deals with how Kirk comes to terms with the mission and the death of Edith Keeler. He returns home to the farm in Iowa and reads through the letters that his father, George Kirk, had sent him and his brother years ago. The bulk of the book is set in 2243 (James Kirk is 10!) and deals with George Kirk and the inaugural mission of the very first Constitution Class Starship, which hadn't even been named yet. George Kirk is a Security Chief on a Starfleet Starbase who works closely with his best friend Drake when they are `abducted' by humans and taken to a secret location to meet Robert April. Kirk and April had known each other for years and Robert explains that he needs George's tactical expertise for a very important mission. A colony ship has been disabled and is drifting inside of an ion storm. With no ships capable of getting to her before the crew and all the families perish, Starfleet intends to send their first starship to the rescue. With all the secrecy surrounding the ship's construction, elements within Starfleet believe that some races may view the building of this vessel as a prelude to an aggressive expansion. With the scars of the first Romulan War still fresh, they do not wish to antagonise them further with the creation of this ship. Undermanned and untested, the ship sets out to rescue the colonists only to have a malfunction of the warp drive deposit them deep inside the Romulan frontier. With no way of getting the warp drive and navigational systems on line before they are discovered, the crew race against the clock to escape enemy territory and George begins to uncover a conspiracy at the heart of the starship construction programme. The book is a very entertaining read and the characters leap off the page. Carey has populated the first starship with a well rounded bridge crew and gives equal time to each of the without seeming like she's just focused on Kirk and April. The CMO, Sarah Poole is well written and her interchanges with the captain are reminiscent of the Kirk / McCoy relationship. Sanaway, Hart, Reed, Saffire, Florida, Graff - all names that you become familiar with and integrate into the timeline of Starfleet. Taking nods from Diane Duane's books on Romulans (My Enemy, My Ally and The Romulan Way), the crew of the Imperial Swarm are also very intriguing. Primus Kilyle is an engaging and charismatic personality and you could almost see Mark Lenard playing him. Unfortunately, one of the clues to the conspiracy is given away in the first third of the book with no attempt to disguise it. This is a shame as it seems a wasted opportunity and would've given the reader something else to think about. The end is well handled and gives a satisfying resolution to the entire affair and the two epilogues are nicely done, especially the one with commentary from `modern times'. All in all, Final Frontier is a vital piece of the Star Trek saga and for those who enjoyed it, the adventures of Robert April and George Kirk continue in Carey's first Hardcover novel, Best Destiny.
