a great read September 28, 2007 this is a brilliant tale from Lyn Andrews. Katherine Donovan and her small charge Ceppie (Concepta) escape from Ireland to Liverpool, after a tragic event forces them to flee. Katherine struggles to make a succes of her boarding house while making warm friendships along the way. Shocks and tragedy are never far away however, the brilliant plot will sweep you away to it's majestic and tearjerking ending.

I bought this book when I was on holiday and it was the first Lyn Andrews book I had read. I couldn't put it down. I read it in less than a day. It was like you were listening to the characters talking because it was written as they would talk and you could hear the accents. The characters were believable and you could imagine the struggle, but from the start you wanted Katherine to succeed, you didn't want Ceppi to behave always, and you wanted to warn Katherine of the danger she was in. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it and now look forward to reading more of Lyn's books.
Well she's done it again! February 19, 2003 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
What an excellent read. If you like Joan Jonker, Anne Baker, Dee Williams, you'll love this book. Our heroine (Katherie) is the daughter of the local moneylender, and therefore is the most despised character in town. When he is murdered, the rough & tough dockers enter her home to see if they can find and destroy any evidence of their loan. Katherine hears them coming so she hides. Once they leave, she comes out from her hiding place and, along with a much younger ragamuffin she has befriended, takes her father's money and runs away, knowing she would have no life if she stayed. They finally rent an old house and turn it into a boarding house. They have some interestig "guests". I won't spoil the tale by telling you too much, but I would recommend you get this book. You won't be able to put it down.
very slow read June 14, 2002 1 out of 3 found this review helpful
i found this book very hard to get involved in as im a crime reader as a rule. i liked the look of this book at first and i must confess i enjoyed the first couple of chapters but afterwards it got very slow and unappealing. leaving her home town with a child who is not even hers was hard to take in especially leaving the young childs family behind. however, the way she looks after the childs needs is incredible and comendable. this is the first Lyn Andrews book i have read and i dont think i will be in a hurry to read any more unless the storyline becomes more enticing.
