nonesuch March 21, 2008 Beauty may attract and plainness may repulse, but they are ony illusions that may lead one to false.
Charming November 19, 2007 This is a wonderful Heyer in which our heroine gets a chance to shine from the lower orders. Here right and worth overcome beauty with very satisfactory results. There is no smugness or moralising here, and we still get the same flashes of wit, the wonderful dialogue and the ridiculous intrigue that are all the ingredients of a first rate Georgette Heyer. Ancilla is a deserving heroine and Waldo a most suitable love interest.
Classic Heyer May 13, 2007 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
A typical in many ways Georgette Heyer novel. It does what it says on the tin. No other novelist recreates the manners, dress, behaviour and language of the Regency period as well as she did. The ending is fairly clear from the beginning but it is the journey that matters with a real creation of atmosphere and character (if a little idealised!). Very enjoyable. If you like historical fiction, highly recommended.
A wonderful book to read again and again July 25, 2005 12 out of 13 found this review helpful
I'm currently going through a phase of reading Georgette Heyer novels (great fun) and of the fifteen or so that I've read to date, this is definitely my favourite.Once again, Heyer provides a quiet heroine who wins the hero through her intelligence and manner, rather than astonishing beauty. In this book, the Astonishing Beauty gets her come-uppance. Waldo Hawkridge is perhaps rather less flawed than most human beings, but the gentle romance between him and Ancilla Trent is lovely to read. The usual cast of amusing characters, great language and amusing escapades makes this book well worth reading. I heartily recommend it.
An eligible bachelor, a 'long meg' and a spoilt beauty. May 13, 2002 31 out of 33 found this review helpful
When I read that this book detailed life in the country, and not in the glamour of London or Bath I was almost put off. What a mistake that would have been. One of the most enjoyable Heyer novels I have read. Sir Waldo Hawkridge is one of the most endearing Heyer heroes; Tiffany Wield is as spoilt as only a truly beautiful girl knows how to be; and Ancilla Trent, despite her reserve, proves to be one of the most enjoyable of all the Heyer heroines - your heart will go out to her. You find yourself worrying over Julian Lindeth as though he were a member of your family. The characters come to life in the relatively quiet backdrop of the West Riding, and you find yourself alternatively exasperated and amused by the antics of the 'beautiful Miss Wield'. One of the wittiest stories Heyer has concocted , that will have you chuckling to yourself. Only one fault - it is over too soon.
