A life-altering book January 16, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
The previous review is right to say that this book might shake your world. This is the first of Barry's books I came across and it's fair to say that no other book has had such a profound effect on me. First of all, you have to be ready to read and begin to understand what Barry is saying. Fundamentally, the book is part of a spiritual 'journey' that is really a growing awareness of the false in you - what you have been programmed to believe and what you are emotionally attached to which is transistory and ultimately unreal. The book questions and exposes these false 'centres' for the unreal attachments they are, all the while undermining your ego and sense of self to such a degree that you will question your friendships, lifestyle choices and 'direction' like never before. At the end of this process is the real - pure being - what is now. Glimpse this for even a few seconds and the life you thought you were living before will seem shallow and meaningless. Do you want a life where you no longer serve the transitory demands of your insecure ego and desires, with the ups and downs and 'excitement' of desire fulfillment and disappointment? Do you want to realise the true nature of love, which is impersonal and far greater than the petty and selfish 'love' which passes for real love? Do you want to go through 'hell' (the letting go of the false, usually slowly and psychologically painfully) to reach a state of 'heaven' (what is and what you are now, beneath the masquerade of the personality and its attachments)? If this sounds attractive to you, then read this book as soon as possible, it will change your life forever. But be warned that there is much suffering in realising the truth and you will literally lose your mind if you are true to life.
A Guide through the jungle! December 13, 2002 6 out of 6 found this review helpful
This book presents a means to answer the question "what is the point of existence?" No religious dogma or faith is required. It exposes, rather eloquently, the human condition and the limitations of man's grasping, desire driven nature. It is expressed in a straightforward, no nonsense manner which provides the seeker with a breath of fresh air in an arena marred with charlatans, pretenders and gobbledegook. This book reminds me of the story that defines the difference between a manager and a strategist. When the manager is tasked with cutting down a chunk of a jungle he busies himself with tasking the axmen to chop, the sharpeners to sharpen and the support staff to provide water & food to maximise efficiency. Then the strategist climbs the highest tree he can & shouts down to the manager "wait a minute... this is the wrong damn jungle!" to which the manager shouts back "shut up, we're making progress!" Barry Long is the strategist, his book is the message & I probably don't need to tell you who the managers are. This book is best read when combined with the tape "Start Meditating Now" & the book "Meditation - a foundation course" - but be careful, it may just shake your world.
