*Really* works, offers great hands-on, levelheaded advice January 13, 2006 7 out of 7 found this review helpful
I am an experienced flyer who has been flying on average 10-12x a year since a good decade, and my best friend is a flight attendant. I even worked for 3 different airlines (on the ground) and yet have always been crippled by fear of flying, especially during turbulences. If you ever ... - thought you had "premonitions" about your plane crashing when you are on the tarmac waiting for takeoff - stepped off of a plane before the doors closed - find yourself sick to your stomach before boarding - worry about the flight back home when you are away from home - actually believe that you might have "heard" a noise that indicates that the plane is about to fall apart mid-flight and contemplate telling the captain what you noticed - have upset stomach, irregular heartbeat or other physical discomfort on a flight ... then this book is for you. It will take your fears seriously but explain to you calmly and with a lot of levelheadedness what is really going on when you're afraid. It will explain to you what goes on during a flight. It will explain to you how to cope with the "side effects" of fear of flying (nausea et al.) and it will hold up a mirror to you that shows you your behaviour and how to change it. This book has changed my life. I have to fly for work quite often and usually by myself, and now that I've read it I can cope with flying for the very first time.
Finally flying without needing the alcohol or valium! February 18, 2005 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
I read this book after reading the reviews about this book - and I wasn't disappointed! If you are thinking about taking your fear in hand - then do it. It will enable you to remain calm and actually enjoy your trip - rather than ruining your holiday by worrying about the return journey. I still have a nice whisky before my flights though... any excuse!!!
A truly amazing book. October 7, 2004 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
Before buying this book I was a bit sceptical as to whether it would help me or not. Twice last year I did not board a flight to Italy much to the annoyance of my wife and my relatives waiting for me at Naples airport. I also lost alot of money. Since reading the book, I can truly say that my fear of flying has gone. In May 2004 I got on a flight to AUSTRALIA!!! and was totally comfortable....even during turbulance!!. I ended up having to re-assure my wife and explain what the different noises were. When I got to Australia I even had a flight in a single engine plane in bad weather and was not worried at all. I cannot recommend this book highly enough to anyone who has the fear...it helped me understand and become more confident in flying. Before I used to sit there listening to the engines and the many different noises of the plane and looking at the stewardess' face during turbulance for re-assurance, but this book explains what the different noises are how dangerous turbulance actually is and different kinds of breathing excersizes you can do, the information in this book alone was enough to settle my mind and have one of the most relaxed flights I have had in along time. Only book they should write now is "Things to do on a plane for 20 hours", the flight was so long and boring I actually prayed for turbulance. Good luck to all you fearful flyers...i hope this book helps you as much as it has helped me. This is definatly a good place to start your journey of recovery.
This book got be back on a plane December 12, 2000 13 out of 13 found this review helpful
I have been flying all my life but in the past two years an irrational fear took hold of me. Twice I have stepped of planes just as the doors were about to be closed. This book, however, reassured me and took away some of the fears and anxieties, especially regarding turbulence which enabled me to start flying again. I recommend it to anyone who has a similar fear, especially in the early stages. If you leave the fear too long and let it grow, the anxiety gets stronger and this book will certainly help. It is easy to read and addresses all the usual fears.
If you're afraid of flying - buy this book! February 1, 2000 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
This book is so well researched. I found it invaluable before and during my flight. My friend even commented that I handled the flight so much better than one previous to buying this book.
