 Absolutely a must read November 24, 2008
I have suffered a fear of flying since I was 16, I avoided it at all costs wherever possible. I am now 45 with 5 children, my husband has never suffered any fear of flying, one of the lucky few thought I. My husband booked me a flight to travel on my own to visit my eldest daughter who had recently started University, panic time! I recently found that a hypnosis CD helped enormously and I was fine on my outward flight but then I suffered a massive panic attack and the fear was overwhelming. How could I possibly make the return flight in a days time feeling like that? I bought this book and now I can say hand on heart, "I love flying". I never thought I would be able to enjoy a flight, I can't wait until the next one. BUY IT, YOU WON'T REGRET IT!

As someone with all of the usual symptoms - fear / panic in the days preceding the flight and such sickness and nausea on take-off I could become hysterical, I thought I'd try this book. I read it three time in the two weeks before the flight and by the day of said flight I was calm and even looking forward to 'trying' the flight. I must admit that when I started reading it I was unsure about the 'feel-good' element of it -but go with and put all scepticism aside. It was a great success - no sweaty palms - in fact I felt quite serene. On the return flight I must say I did feel a bit antsy at the airport, and as I walked down the tunnel to the plane I felt a bit nervous. But the strangest thing happened - as soon as I sat down in my seat (normally the time complete panic would set in), I felt unbelievably calm and had another successful flight. I spent two years previously avoiding flying wherever possible - and now have three holidays (using planes) booked! Buy it and good luck.

Consider these facts before buying the book:-
1. I used to get very nervous about flying and would look for any alternative mode of transport, or would avoid travelling altogether. I would get anxious at even the THOUGHT of booking a ticket.
2. I read this book Christmas 2005.
3. A week later I booked a flight to New York to celebrate my girlfriend's 30th birthday.
4. I ENJOYED the flight to New York and even took a helicopter ride over Manhattan.
5. This Christmas we flew out to Australia to visit the person who gave me this book, and also journeyed on 6 internal flights.
6. With an open mind and a real desire to overcome your fear, this book really will help you to enjoy flying.
7. Buy this book and start exploring our fantastic planet!

I am utterly convinced that none of the other reviewers of this book have a REAL fear of flying. If, like me, you have an all-consuming fear, (despite researching aviation safety and reading as many books as you can about curing your fear of flying etc)then I'm convinced that you'll find this book as unhelpful as I did.
Mr Carr spends the first few chapters assuring you that your fear is perfectly rational because planes DO crash, which is kind of him, given his target audience. He then talks about how much more likely you are to die in your garden than in a plane, thus creating a fear of gardening (as if I don't have enough to worry about!!). He EVEN includes the two most useless facts anyone with a genuine fear of flying can EVER hear -take note, Allen-
1) Everyone dies some day
2) You're more likely to be kicked to death by a donkey than die in a plane
Well readers, have I cured your fear of flying yet? NO?!! Shocking. What, even if I talk incessantly about how much I love flying? Even if I constantly mention that my 'method' will cure you, without ever actually getting to 'my method'? NO?? Well, you must be lacking a positive, open mind then. Not my fault.
One piece of advice? Save your money and put it towards a Virgin Atlantic Flying Without Fear course. And no, I don't work for Virgin. It just helped me a lot more than this book.

I was fine with flying until I had a disastrous flight a few years back. On every subsequent flight I have panicked for weeks beforehand (usually from the minute I make the booking) and have to be 'well oiled' (just a couple, mind) before I can set foot on the plane. I have had to be dragged ON to the plane by my husband and physically STOPPED from running back to the terminal...things were not good. I ended up spoiling what were mostly short breaks by watching weather reports for flying home and panicking about the flight itself.A friend just happened to tell me about this book and in desperation I bought it, knowing about Carr's 'stop smoking' reputation. Before long I was quoting 'fascinating' facts about planes and flying to my husband. I only finished it the day before we flew, and I flew out AND home SOBER, and really enjoyed the flights! I still can't believe that something as simple as reading a book could allay what had pretty much become a phobia, but I can assure you it really does work. I'd seriously recommend this to anybody with a fear of flying. I was terrible - now I consider myself CURED!
