Ah the memories this cd has brought back to me of queueing for cheap standing tickets at Stratford in the 60s and 70s! 'To be or not to be' is there, delivered by my first Hamlet, David Warner, in his controversial performance loved by all us rebellious teens in the 60s.And what a shock it was to hear it again, the quiet, matter of fact debate with self. Alan Howard's marvellous Henry V is there, Janet Suzman's unsurpassable Cleopatra, Scofield's Lear and Ian McKellen's Romeo. The greatest stage performers of their time, in fact, are all here, in carefully chosen snippets. Some have complained about audience and background noise on the recordings, who cares? The noise adds to the feeling of being there. I am only too delighted to find out that microphones were there and that we can relive or hear for the first time at least a snippet of these wonderful performances.
