Notwithstanding the other review someone has posted, the outstanding elements in my view are the piano concerto to end all piano concertos is the nost hilarious: Greig + Tchikovski + Addinsell etc makes it difficult to listen to these in their pure form. And then there is the other hilarious elements, including the woodwind. And from my memory I recall the various Hoffnung inerviews, and the speech to the Oxford union, which I think comes from an article in the Scots Law Times ... but even memory makes me laugh. Back to the discs ..and the cartoons. I regret his so early death. I saw a memoir of him years ago, and failed to but it. Ah well, ... F.L.

I bought this 2-CD set only because the 13 November 1956 Royal Festival Hall concert recording is not available separately. I have no interest in the Hoffnung-less 1958 and 1961 concerts. The 1956 concert, however, deserves all five stars. Priceless parody. Worth the price just to hear Dennis Brain play a Leopold Mozart alphorn movement on the hosepipe, which he does beautifully. Chopin Mazurka for tuba quartet. A Donald Swann arrangement of Haydn is there too. While you're here, take a look at the Flanders & Swann compilation "A Transport of Delight," listed under the Popular Music heading.
