Moving and thought-provoking May 5, 2004

A Way through the Mountains is a powerfully written love story, passionate without being sentimental. Beautifully written, both in the descriptions of the Chinese countryside and the drawing of the main characters, this book confirms Elizabeth McGregor as an outstanding author. For me the story worked on two levels, the first being a gripping tale of love and survival aginst the odds. It also told of a journey that we all must take to find ourselves and relate to those around us and above all, a celebration of "being a bit different".

This novel is one which takes the reader on a expedition of discovery and I finished this book in the realisation that I had made many metaphysical journeys of my own. The relationships in the book are both beautiful and treacherous-as is Wilson's life long quest to find The Dove Tree. "A Way Through The Mountains" is uniquely inspirational. Elizabeth McGregor's ability to create the breathtaking Chinese landscape together with the portrayal of love at its most powerful, thoroughly moved me.

I picked this book up at random in my supermarket - and was delighted to find an excellent author that I had never heard of before.( I read voraciously) The characters were finely drawn and I felt that I really wanted to know what happened to them. The book is unsentimental in its detailed portrayal of Rachel and her mother and their difficulties - and the resolution of the story more realistic than I expected.
