Hurley keeps getting better September 12, 2008 I am so glad I discovered Graham Hurley! Why he doesn't seem to be up there in bright lights is beyond me. Read them in sequence - it helps. This one [No5] is certainly the best so far. As police procedurals go, it takes some beating. Tough [and knowledgeable] on drug problems with an unflinching approach to it and an unglamourised picture of police officers [and their families]. Really really good to see such a novel not based in London or Scotland. Only one complaint - Faraday and Winter work in the same department [more or less] and yet speak to each other about once in the whole novel! They have different approaches, true, but I'd like to see a bit more rapport between them in future books. Nit-picking really. Superb book!
A gripping read April 22, 2008 These Joe Farrady books keep getting better. 'Cut to black' got off to a very slow start, and I was at the point of giving up as I just couldn't get into it. But it soon perked up and was un-put-downable by the end. Another reviewer on here talks about little or no plot, to a degree thats true, but if you've read the books in sequence then you'll know all about the history and background of Bazza Mackenzie. This in itself makes this book a good read. You must remember, these are NOT detective novels, but described as 'Police Procedural' novels, so a complex plot is not expected. Although not essential, it is of great benefit to read these Joe Farrady series books in order. Cut to black is the 5th. And yes, I agree with other comments on here, the characters are authentic, Paul Winter being my favourite.
Authentic Locations February 8, 2008 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
I have read all of this series of books, I am on the latest one, extremely entertaining. I think we can all relate to Paul Winter, in our own ways. A previous reviewer wondered if the locations were authentic, and I can tell you that they most certainly are. Hurley has really done his homework on this, and as an ex-Pompey boy myself, I am impressed with his eye for detail. Are you a Pompey boy Graham? I see that, like me, you now live in the West Country.
Not Hurley's best but a good read nonetheless January 22, 2008 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
Inspector Joe Faraday is almost the Portsmouth equivalent of John Rebus. Well, maybe not quite but certainly in the same school of crime fiction. Faraday struggles with being a single parent and his own personal demons in a multi-threaded plot.
It's also refreshing to find a book set in an English province rather than London or America. The plot locations are (as far as I can tell) authentic and the characters well studied. The after-hours police culture appears authentic and it's good to find that the heroes / heroines are not described as "the beautiful / handsome / intelligent ..... etc) but are real people with good and bad points.
This is not a book to set the world alight but it's well worth a read if you are a crime fiction reader. The other Faraday books are equally worth a read.
Faraday just gets better and better April 28, 2007 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
A marvellous read. DI Faraday and his colleagues in Portsmouth CID are completely authentic - I have worked with characters like these over the years.
There are six books out now featuring DI Faraday and I recommend reading them in sequence - each book is a complete story but it is worth it to watch and understand how the characters develop.
Good multi linked plots, realistic stories and characters - a very enjoyable read.
