Crime audio does not get better than this July 31, 2004 9 out of 9 found this review helpful
I listen to a lot of audiobooks, and Paul Temple is my favourite of the mystery detectives. I love the way that the BBC put so much effort into making a drama of a story, not just a reading, that must be cheaper to make but all the sound effects and lots of actors make this a real feast. Great fun and very compelling.
A faulty transfer of a top class radio production. November 23, 2001 31 out of 39 found this review helpful
Stylish, radio crime thrillers were never better than the Paul Temple series broadcast over a period of thirty years on the BBC. Francis Durbridge's scripts were never above B Class, but his formula of fast moving crime detection, frequent location changes, and hidden danger resulted in compelling listening for a world-wide audience of millions. Peter Coke as Paul Temple and especially Marjorie Westbury as his wife Steve, brought high distinction and superb radio acting technique to some pretty ordinary scripts. There were 21 Paul Temple cases in the broadcast series altogether. While I welcome the reissue of "The Gilbert Case" on audio cassette in the BBC Radio Collection, I must register a disappointment. As soon as the opening theme music begins - "Coronation Scot" by Vivian Ellis - it becomes clear that the original tapes have been copied at an incorrect speed. The music plays at a semi-tone higher, and when the dialogue begins, the men sound like teenagers, and Marjorie Westbury as Steve sounds like a squeaking doll.
A corker! August 3, 2001 22 out of 22 found this review helpful
The Gilbert case sees Paul Temple and his glamorous wife Steve in cracking form. First broadcast in 1954, The Gilbert Case relates Paul's investigation into the affairs surrounding the conviction and sentencing to death of Howard Gilbert for the murder of his girlfriend Brenda Stirling. Brenda's father comes to Paul just as he and Steve are about to go on hoilday (again!) to say that he thinks Howard is innocent... Scotland yard are at a dead end, can Paul and Steve prove Howard's innocence before it is too late? The plot moves swiftly and excitingly along for almost 4 hours of thrills and spills in the sophisticated world of the the West End, and the seedy world of crime. This story also contains the key to Steve's famous phrase for checking if the man on the telephone really IS Paul.... "Where's Charlie fishing?" the answer should be "In the Thames", but will it be....? As evocative of another time and way of life as the other Paul Temple BBC releases, this is one his fans must not miss.
