| Editorial Reviews:
Amazon.co.uk Review Dick Francis's legion of admirers can relax: his year off from writing is over and a new vigour has entered his style. Longtime readers will be happy to find the customary racetrack skulduggery, galvanised by some fascinating new elements. The very opening of Second Wind signals something new, with Francis's protagonist fighting for his life in a Caribbean storm at sea: "But now, as near dead as dammit, I tumbled like a rag-doll piece of flotsam in towering gale-driven seas that sucked unimaginable tons of water from the deeps
" In flashback, we are catapulted into the world of meteorologist Perry Stuart who agrees to fly through the eye of storm on Trox Island, a blighted place steeped in guano and harbouring a nasty secret. When the reader encounters details of the racing world in Francis's earlier thrillers, it had the satisfying ring of authenticity. The same is true in Second Wind, as Stuart's character was developed with the help of BBC weatherman John Kettley. Although a new venue for Francis, he still has the knack of quickening the readers' pulse with a few carefully chosen words: "Despair was too strong a word for it. Perhaps despondency was better. When they came for me, they came with guns." --Barry Forshaw

Nice change September 21, 2001 I loved it, did not put it down until it was finished. Sure, people prefering the horse background over and over again, won't like it. I think it is great to learn about different fields- in such a fascinating way. DF is a great researcher, and suspenseful writer. Wish I could write like he can. By the way, I am 30 - and contrary to one of the reviewers, think DF can very well remember how it feels to be 30. If you like DF and have an open, interested mind, it's a great buy!
Come in, Mr Francis, your time is up March 6, 2001 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
OKay, I'm going to say what I'm sure plenty of others have thought, especially if they've also read 'Shattered' (which is better but just doesn't compare with 'Banker' or 'Break In'). At the risk of being really ageist, the problem is just that Mr Francis isn't the same age, or near the same age, as his characters any more, and seems unable to remember clearly what it's like to be thirty! The main problem with 10lb Penalty was that a main character who was supposed to be 17 spoke in exactly the same way as all Francis's other heroes. Now it looks like the same problem has spread to Francis's other heroes as well.
Time for the knacker's yard. February 19, 2001 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
Like everyone else, it seems, I enjoyed his early work. But this was dire, simply the worst novel I've ever read.Everything about the book was lazy and self-indulgent. The story was pointless and rambling. Characters were introduced seemingly at random. And the romantic sub-plot between our hero and his granny's nurse was almost funny. Almost. Above all, though, how could any author decide to cast a BBC weather forecaster in the role of action hero? Labouring from one page to the next I couldn't shake this mental image of Ian McCaskill battling international terrorists.
Sadly, the worst thing he's ever done January 17, 2001 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
I've read everything the guy's ever written and enjoyed the vast majority, but this one, quite frankly, is awful. Put your feet up, Dick!
The most recent and sadly the poorsest Dick Francis book January 6, 2001 Having read all of his books I feel that the last 5 have been something of a let down with 'Second Wind' almost unreadable. Where once I looked forward to his latest offering, now it's a case of "Is he still churning them out". Maybe it's time to stop, to be remembered for the good ones.
