5 out of 5 stars Beautiful writing, difficult reading   August 15, 2008

This book should be a class reader in every secondary school. It should be used to encourage debate open about what happens when ignorance and misunderstanding between cultures takes hold. Told in short, sharp chapters in multi-narrative, Gibbons' story builds bit by tiny bit until the tension is unbearable. It is a gripping story of two families using the cliche of Romeo and Juliet but to devastating effect. Easy-going but earnest Mike meets intelligent and feisty Rabia at a meeting to discuss a local book award and immediately falls for her. She, in turn, falls for him but it isn't easy when both of them have stupid, arrogant brothers hellbent on fighting the racists each sees the other as. Caught in the Crossfire couldn't be more apt, more relevant, more what contemporary books for contemporary teenagers should be about. Read it and weep.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely compelling   June 29, 2008
As a person who reads all sorts of different books, I was so pleased when 'Caught in the Crossfire' really caught my attention. The characters are scarily real and complex and the plot has so many twists and turns, you will be completely hooked. The story is (unfortunately) very topical, the ending is a shocker and if the word exists, the novel really is unputdownable! 5 stars are truly not enough.

5 out of 5 stars Powerful   November 23, 2006

This book is amazing. I first read the book when i was in school 3 years ago because a friend recommended it to me. I was truely moved when i read it, and not alot of books do that for me. The diversity of the characters are brilliant. Each character shows a different view on what racism means and represents to them in their community. Caught in the crossfire is about love, rascism and politics. A must read.

This is the best book Alan Gibbons has writen. It is incredibly powerful and makes the issues it deals with very real. Alan Gibbons wrote it in the 6 weeks after 9/11 to show that not all british were haters of Islam. You must read this book. Just read it. NOW.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book   May 12, 2004

This book is based on the aftermath of September 11th. A political party named the Patriotic League an extremely racist political party want to get Britain back for the British and now they have a perfect excuse.

The book is based around six main characters, Rabia and Tahir who are both British Muslims, Daz and Jason are two teenagers with racist views looking for trouble and most importantly Mike and Liam who are both on different sides.

This book is a book that I believe all teenagers should read. The way Gibbons makes you feel like you are part of the characters is sensational. It is almost as though you are watching events from the distance as a spectator. Also some of the events in the book are really believable and the sort of events that are happening around us in real life.

Basically you MUST read this book. Just by it I personally guarantee that you will find it very very hard to put it down. I read it in 6 hours it really is addictive.
