FAIL - notably not written by the textbook authors. March 24, 2001 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
As teacher's books go, this is not a very good one. Essentially, it just tells you the purpose of each question and the correct answer. Some token effort is made to encourage you to emphasise main points, but no hint on how to do it is offered. As you know, class preparation takes almost as much time as the class, and therefore it is helpful when you can clearly see what it is that need to be emphasised and how you should go about explaining it. Even a teacher with years of experience appreciates a clear cue, especially if he or she is teaching several different levels using several different books. Business Objectives is a heavy course with lots of material, and more effort should have been put into the teacher's book. That said, it does contain a very useful set of photocopiable progress tests.
Interesting and well designed March 24, 2001 A workbook that is an essential part of the Business Objectives English course, and which could be used as a standalone exercise book if you wish to practice and consolidate your business English.
Could do better. March 24, 2001 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
Not a bad book as business English course books go. However, I would describe it as being in the category of higher-intermediate level books, rather than the lower-intermediate level that it is promoted to be. With regard to vocabulary, it is introduced rather haphazardly throughout the course, as are the grammatical features of English. Moreover, if you wish to complete the course within one academic year, your students will need to possess a good understanding of business terminology in their own language in order to be able to cope with the business concepts used throughout the book. This is a good book, provided you are dealing with adult learners, with a higher-intermediate level of English and a business background. The fifteen chapters the book contains cover the majority of business situations in a realistic and interesting manner. The workbook that accompanies the text is an essential part of the course and will have to be bought if the students are to achieve any progress. The same goes for the accompanying audiocassette, you cannot use the course book without the audiocassette. The teacher's book is rather thin, superficial in its support, and does not really help you plan anything. It does contain, however, some very useful progress tests. In summary, a good higher-intermediate level business English book for students with a higher-intermediate level of general English.
Absolutely hopeless: a total waste of time. December 14, 2000 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This book is the teacher's manual for the `Business Objectives' texts. From my teaching experience using Business Objectives, this teacher's manual is utterly useless and a complete waste of time. For example, it doesn't bother telling you what to do or offer advice about any of the lessons, but just tells you to refer to the student's book. Many times, the advice it does give is just obvious or silly. My guess is that the people who wrote this book have very little or perhaps no experience of using the `Business Objectives' book in class.
An attractive and useful book with some problems. December 14, 2000 This book is an EFL textbook designed for business classes at a lower-intermediate level. The book is fairly well written, and it has attractive and interesting contents. The book at first seems well designed, but once you have taught the book with a class you become aware of several problems. First of all, some of the exercises in the book just don't work. The teacher's book is so lazily written that it is almost no help at all when you can't work out what the exercises want you to do. And much worse, there are mistakes throughout the book. The book mostly steers clear of trying to teach grammar, but when it does there are some glaring mistakes. Also, there are some bizarre errors in phonetics in the book. In general it seems to me that the book is useful, but that it has been put together with more attention to style than to substance.
