In her second volume of autobiography, Joyce Grenfell wrote, "I have a pen-friend whom I have never seen. . . Her name is Katharine Moore."
It was a correspondence that began in 1957 when Katharine Moore wrote to defend a poem Joyce Grenfell had criticised on the radio. They soon became fast friends and were to share their experience of life, their ideas and their reading until Joyce Grenfell's untimely death.
These letters provide a complete record of their invisible friendship: warm and lively, they also illustrate a philosophy of life which was perhaps the chief reason for Joyce Grenfell's enduring appeal.
