A comic masterpiece February 24, 2010 Shouna Falconer As a fan of Dickens, I'd always overlooked this book since I had heard that it just meandered around without ever going anywhere. However, having now read it I realise that I was in danger of missing out on a hugely enjoyable read. The book is steeped in comic genius and even the more verbose passages manage to hold the reader's attention. It's true that it goes nowhere, but that's the fun of the novel. The reader is taken along on a fun filled romp. It was with a sigh that I started to read the first "story" embedded in the main narrative, with nothing whatsoever to do with the plot, since I'd remembered feeling impatient with two such stories in "Nicholas Nicholby". However, I quickly realised that such stories had more place here than in N.N. and that's just as well because there are many more of them. The funniest section is the description of a skating expedition, one that can't fail to strike a chord with any novice skater, and a passage that would stand alone as a short story.
Oh the squawking and shouting! February 15, 2010 Francesca Cook (England) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I loved this book back at school and was pleased to find it on cd being performed by an actor whose name I knew from various things over the years. Or at least I thought I knew, because on this recording he is unlistenable. One moment he speaks in his well mannered tones, painting the pictures in my imagination - and then bursts into the voices of the characters, rising through the scales and then dropping to boom out the next person! Soft, quiet, LOUD, quiet, LOUD, squawking, quiet LOUD soft LOUD quiet.... all the time, and I have only managed to listen to one cd of this set and have tried very many times to get further. I can't, and this will soon reside with a friend for ever. Sadly this is beyond me.
print size January 30, 2010 Mme Coussin (France) Love the book, definitely my favourite Dicken's but isn't there a
way of indicating print size to avoid problems and pointless purchases for
us older readers?
Delightfully brought to life! January 21, 2010 Bandekafsh (London) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
An abridgement onto four CDs of The Pickwick Papers is no more than a taste of this long novel, but what a delicious taste! Anton Lessser reads wonderfully, and his range of voices for the many characters is impressive, so much so that I often forgot I was listening to just one person reading - it felt more like a full cast dramatisation. Hugely enjoyable and very strongly recommended. Five stars richly deserved.
Thoroughly enjoyable November 1, 2009 Scott Marshall (England) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
This is a quite heavily abridged rendition of The Pickwick Papers, and whereas it has the feeling of losing a lot of the detail, it still serves its purpose as a very entertaining introduction to the world of Dickens and his works. Anton Lesser's narration and characterisation is superb, and helps bring the story to life - although towards the end he seems to run out of different voices for the many different characters and some of them do start to sound like each other. The end also feels a bit rushed, as though they were struggling to fit everything onto four CDs. I think that was an unfortunate limitation, I would happily have listened to a much longer version. For that reason alone I give this version four stars rather than five.
