 Beautifully written with amazing insight December 15, 2003

I found this book very readable and almost unputdownable. Unlike the previous reviewer, I didn't find it bleak but refreshingly realistic about people's lives. And the insight into the characters was just stunning as well as fascinating. I honestly feel my understanding of human nature has increased as a result of this book and I now understand some of the people in my life much better.

"A Family Romance", though beautifully written, is, perhaps, just a little too depressing. It is the story of Jane, (there is no specific "plot", but it does not suffer for this) and how she manages to love and accept her Aunt Dolly, a flamboyant woman of European origin and the opposite of Jane herself. It charts the events involving the two women (with some beautiful biographical information about their background and history) and the ups and downs they experience. It is written in an almost lilting style and is easy to read, and fairly compelling, and it offers an interesting insight into the feelings of the feelings of loneliness and isolation and how different people deal with them. However, it contains little light relief, with death as an important part of the story and featuring cold characters who refuse to understand one another and seem unable to conect. There are some interesting episodes, occasional humour and well-depicted settings, but, though I would recommend the book, I would not suggest reading it if your aim is to be solely entertained.
