Eleanor Rigby's sister makes good! April 26, 2008
I read "Hotel du Lac" back when it won the Booker in the 80's and can remember... absolutely nothing about it. So I wasn't too sure what to expect from "Fraud". All the back cover stuff about middle-aged spinsters, repressed English lives, social conventions etc made the book sound dull as ditchwater. But I'm a bit of a masochist, so I gave it a go and - whaddya know? - it's actually all quite engaging.
Yep, pretty much nothing happens. There's a tiny bit of plot in the opening pages which is wrapped up in the closing pages. The other 200 pages in between consist of a series of character sketches and reminiscences, limited to a handful of people in a handful of similar situations. But somehow Brookner finds - I'm going to hate myself for using this cliche - universal human truths in her portrayals. And the ending (note: not climax) is quietly uplifting.
So, no fireworks, no soap opera, no flashy technique. Just a penetrating mind and a gentle optimism. There are worse ways to spend a few hours...
