A moving and worthwhile read February 27, 2010 Dr. G. E. Grant (Manchester, UK) This is a wonderful conclusion to a wide-ranging and thought-provoking trilogy, exploring not just the now-familiar horrors of the Great War, but psychological trauma, death, sex, morality and - in the Melanesian scenes in this book - truisms across cultures.
The Ghost Road is in many ways the best of the three, focussing primarally on the psychologist Rivers and the anti-hero of the trilogy, Billy Prior, who, in his return to France, is given a much more meaningful and emotional role than was apparent in the fairly middling second book 'The Eye In The Door'.
One of the obvious criticisms is that these characters - even though many are based on real, historical people - are defiantly NOT people of the 1910s, but - in morals, outlook, and mainly a pervasive sense of modern liberalism - people of our own time. Rivers the psychologist heals the 'shell-shocked' not by the crude electric-shock treatment of his peers, but by empathy, understanding and psychological techniques that would not be out of place in today's healthcare system. The fighting men and patients have attitudes to homosexuality and trauma, and a level of worldly cynicism, that are not apparent in contemporary accounts, but which make them seem much more creatures of our own time.
I do not see this as a bad thing, however; by giving her protagonists modern values, Barker allows her modern readers to empathise with, and understand, her characters better, increasing the emotional impact of their various ups and downs.
This is a wonderful book, haunting and thought-provoking, and deserves its place as one of the best books written about World War One, or even of the last 20 years.
The Ghost Road January 30, 2010 R. Schofield This book is the third book of a brilliant trilogy of events and people during, and involved in, WW1. The insight into some of the horrors of, and resulting from, that war should be share by anybody who looks on it as just a piece of history.
Fantastically written, but not as good as the first two. January 19, 2010 Scottykb (England) There is no doubt that the final book in the Regeneration Trilogy is touching, but compared to the first two this seemed flat and lacking something. This book is told mainly from River's perspective as his conscience begins to break with what his country has forced him to do for last few years: treating shell-shocked men only to send them back into the war to probable death. River's lies in bed ill and remembers the time he spent living with and studying a tribe in the Soloman Islands that serves to show us that our war-like nature always finds a way of exerting itself. This is a sad book, and the end to Billy's tale is blunt and cold, as so so many were.
I will warn you that this book is not as interesting as the others and that Billy's part of the story does not cover many pages.
The flatness of this book did add to the feel of the First World War coming to an end and gave a calm, winding down feel compared to the first two novels. At the end of the book one is left with a hollow emptiness and a feeling of futility.
A kind of nobility September 18, 2009 Eileen Shaw (Leeds, England) There are two main characters in this novel, winner of the 1995 Booker Prize and part of a trilogy about the Great War. The agony and distress of the trenches is conveyed mainly by Billy Prior. He was wounded and then invalided out to a clinic in Scotland where he was treated for psychological problems and asthma. But as soon as he is allowed he goes back to the front. The terrible trauma of men engaged in battle also gives them a kind of nobility. As Billy says, there is no other place that he can be and be alive. Billy is a brutal character in some ways; bisexual, he is both engaged to Sarah and takes pleasure in rough homosexual encounters. This is presented by Barker as the norm for a certain kind of man, and perhaps it is and was at the time.
Billy meets Dr Rivers at the clinic, and Barker's story is based on much of the work that was done with shell-shocked and other psychologically damaged men during this period of history. Dr Rivers is based on the real director of the clinic and his work was ground-breaking. Much of the narrative taken up with his work also concerns his memories of anthropological work in the African Rain Forest, with a tribe of head-hunters. Their rituals and lives work as a fascinating parallel to the madness and traumas of the First World War.
Further characters include Siegfried Sasoon, seen at one remove through reports of his manoeuvres to return to the front and his subsequent death, and Wilfred Owen, a friend of Billy Prior's. The terrors of gas, bombardment and the horror of going over the top and subsequent toll on their physical and mental well-being are well conveyed through these and other men. This book is a violent and tender tour de force - compressed, tightly unemotional, viciously realistic and atmospheric. It is not a comfortable read, but it is tremendously authentic and affecting.
Readable, moving, significant... June 15, 2009 Nom de Plume (UK) Following Billy Prior back to front line for the 4th time, this is an intelligently written novel which can be read in isolation or as the third of the Regeneration trilogy and I can't recommend it enough. It humanizes the devastating history of WW1, offering insights into aspects of early 20th century life and war-time that we may mistakenly think of of as contemporary issues (eg. bi-sexuality, psychoanalysis). I read it when it was first published and was blown away by how Barkers unsentimental writing charges the novel with significance and impact. Read a second time during an undergraduate Literature course and the same is true, plus the in-depth analysis made it an even better read - you can't always say that.
