ENTER THE DARKSIDE July 4, 2010 Mr Pineapples (Rural England) Just like that scene in "Good Fellas" where the camera follows our hero as he enters a club (girlfriend in tow) by weaving his way through the kitchen; the camera is on his shoulder the whole time adding an edge and tension.
And this is how we are taken through this story - inch by inch with an amazing amount of ground level detail.
Ian Rankin has to describe everything he sees, sometimes it is helpful and other times not. The detail adds volume to the book, but not always enlightnment.
This was my first Ian Rankin and I was impressed with the characterisation and development of the plot. For the most part I enjoyed the quick witted one-liners of Mr Rebus, but on occassions it grated a little and became tiresome. I mean - bloody hell cant the guy speak normally? Has he got to have a smart-arsed comment on everything? He's like a joker with tourettes.
I didnt find this book spiritually uplifting. On the contrary, it had a slightly depressing effect as it wallowed and celebrated the dark side of society.
It was gripping at times and interesting, but it left a bad taste.
However, it was well written and worth the time I dedicated to reading it.
A bit different from the norm. April 23, 2010 Nautical (Ireland) I can't make my mind up about Rebus books - I find sometimes the dour nature of the main character takes something from the story, but not so here. The backround to the plot was well researched and the story moved at a sensible pace. All in all a very good book.
Rankin and Rebus, low odds.. June 22, 2008 B. Jonsson (falun, dalarna sweden) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Low odds, because it's always a winning concept.
John rebus, the half alcoholic, half outcast, much hated DI is back.
He doesn't give a toss about procedure, he is insubordinate, he constantly walks a tightrope between being fired and being let off the hook.
This time, he is not only the target of the common scorn and reprimands, but also physically, as he wanders off alone in shady neighborhoods.
A serial killer stalks Aberdeen. The case has nothing to do with Edinburgh, so it should be no business of Rebus's. Yet, there are similarities to another, older serial killer's work, a killer supposed to be locked away and long since deceased. The local rags have already picked up this and both they and the brass want to know about the old inquiries, the collar and evidence of the killer's guilt. As the arresting officer has committed suicide, only one cop is still to be interrogated.. Rebus.
Meanwhile, he is off trying to discern three major cases from each other, or is it possible they are somehow connected ?
As he goes out on a limb to follow his hunches, some very dangerous people gets wind of his coming, information leaking from within the police itself. Who he can trust seems a gamble. And then, an old evil awakens...
Rebus has come to a turning point in his career, and his life!
He suddenly understands how easy it is to keep a blind eye to protocol, how easy his powers could be misused. He suddenly realizes that maybe he doesn't want to be a drunkard any more. After a sudden panic attack he changes direction, tries to sober up.
John Rebus is a self consuming fire which keeps the reader absorbed. Slow progress, , ...
Rankin carefully stirs his hot pot of confused leads, unholy alliances, dirty cops and painstakingly slow progress to a perfect serving.
Enjoy! I did.
One of the greatest novels of the 1990s in any genre May 29, 2007 S. R. Body (London) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
I don't usually post reviews to amazon but felt that this book shouldn't have a two-star critique at the head of its feedback. The Rebus series is the finest detective series around and this was where Rankin really hit his stride - going from fine 'crime' writer to great novelist. It mixes four main plot strands and touches on a a multitude of styles from film noir, hard-boiled, trad gumshoe detective, Scottish gothic, and most intrigueingly - The Western. Though at its heart lies the search to stop a (or is it two) serial killer (s), this is Rebus as Gary Cooper or The Searchers' Ethan heading from one frontier to another - some of the remotest outposts of Scotland are covered - trying to do what is right for the vividly drawn [usually forgotten] victims of violent crime while constantly bashing up against big business and corruption inside and outside the Police. In the end, though the plot strands mesh impeccably, there is no real closure - for protagonists or readers - leaving Rebus still in a state of ghost-haunted guilt and the reader wondering about the fates of many of the key players. If this sounds unsatisfying, it isn't; more the sign of a maturing writer at his peak. Along the way there are some great supporting characters (re-)emerging, from his former drinking pal Jack Morton, now off the bottle and offering Rebus an alternative future, and Siobhan Clarke torn between towing the company line and following Rebus' lead as mentor. The rock n roll references are just right and the prose is taut throughout. Rather than pat solutions, the book leaves one thinking about the nature of Good and Evil; Fathers and Sons; Mentors and Pupils; truth, justice and responsibility and so much more. Black and Blue in so many ways, but an uplifting reading experience nonetheless.
A lot of better books around November 9, 2006 Janie U (Kings Cliffe, England) 0 out of 3 found this review helpful
The version I read started with an introduction by the author where he says that this is the best Rebus he has written yet - which I found vaguely irritating. It made me want to prove him wrong by going back and reading all the previous ones - I don't like an author telling me what I should like and what I shouldn't (if he didn't think that his latest book was great then he should not be releasing it!! )
In this book Rebus travels from city to city within Scotland, which personally grates a little as I has recently visited Edinburgh for the first time and was looking forward to recognising the places that he sees on his meanderings around the city - I have read several Rebus books before and it does put a very different slant on the book when you know what the streets and building look like.
Having said all this, I did like the plot and liked the way that several different murders and murderers were brought in and linked together. I also liked the desciption of his visit to an oil rig - never read that in a book before.
As I progressed with the book, I started to find Rebus's difficulty dealing with others a bit wearing. It seems as though for the first 2 thirds of the book, he was against everything and everyone and then for the remainder had suddenly taken some co-operation pills and was keen to work with everyone and tie up all the loose ends.
It has been a while since I had read a Rebus book. This book reminded me why as I did find it slow going, although it was alright in the end. I will read others in the future, but not yet!!
