disappointing December 1, 2008 Janie (Brighton, England) I didn't like this book I'm afraid - I found it annoyingly self-referential and irritatingly in love with itself. Of course it's meant to be tongue in cheek, but the authors spend a lot of time telling the reader how good their other books are. The book spends a lot of time criticising organised religion, which is fine, but in the present climate many of their points seem obvious and indulgent. The book is written as a novel but there is no attempt to place any scenes in terms of place and time. None of the characters exist in more than one dimension. I found Freke's Lucid Living much more interesting and inspiring.
You can change your life-view - safely. March 21, 2008 Marie (North West (U.K.)) Although classed as a "novel" this is not only a very funny-but-serious effort too, to get across an understanding of the mystery of Creativity to us all...and how we can take charge of our own existences. Maybe the first couple of chapters have to be carefully re-read in order to familiarise the reader with the "slant" of the message, but, after that ...it's mind and heart opening stuff (with a smile!) all the way! For someone like me - who has trouble understanding the "deep and meaningful" stuff - this work is an invaluable gift from the authors (or "the Author!")for which I will be forever grateful.
'Seriously' funny January 1, 2008 Rev Bev 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
What a relief to see in accessible form all the years of study and research Freke and Gandy have accomplished. This book is far more real than many about Christ's life and teachings, that tie themselves in knots trying to 'prove' his existence. This is a book for those who have experienced 'Christ' and do not need the literalist view to keep faith. I would recomend this to all 'who have ears to hear' and to all who understand the true value of 'story'
Jesus for enlightenment, not guilt January 1, 2008 James M. Sorrells 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
For 22 years, approximately 200 Fellows of the Westar Institute, the Jesus Seminar, have attempted to parse Jesus' alleged utterances into categories of possibly said, unlikely to have said, and impossible to have said. Needless to say, this kind of investigation can get very, very weighty. Instead, Freke and Gandy have given us a delightful book, which I find quite funny in lots of places, that enables the reader to understand the difference between the literal, historical Jesus and the Gnostic Jesus, even if the reader has no formal background or training. And understanding that difference can make a difference between a Chrisitan experience that is guilt-ridden and one that is enlightening. Maybe other reviewers consider this a trivial pursuit, but I bought a dozen copies for my dearest friends.
The Coming December 31, 2007 Willemsen (Holland) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Can there be a more simple, just (and funny) explanation of what Gnostic knowing is than what Freke and Gandi give us in the 'Gospel of the Second Coming'? NO. Read this. The 252 pages are enough to 'enlighten' you.
