5 out of 5 stars An excellent guide from the a genuine meditation master   December 19, 2008

This is one of my favourite books which I have been using for several years. It may seem concise, but that does not matter as the descriptions are detailed enough to give a useful and helpful structure for successful buddhist meditation.

The writer encourages the reader to use personal experience alongside the guidelines to mix the mind with positive qualities such as love or compassion. An authentic concise guide to "Lamrim" written with clarity and wisdom. I would reccomend this to anyone.

This is a rigid and prescriptive book where subjects are lectured on rather than a book that encourages a free thinking explorative approach.
As has been said before there are many better books on the market covering this topic, Guided Meditations on the Stages of the Path by Thubten Chodron for one, also available on amazon.

1 out of 5 stars Avoid at all costs   April 30, 2008

In this slim volume, Lamrim meditation techniques are merely brought to the table with little in the way of detailed explanations, sources or support beyond that of the author's. There is no bibliography and the reader is expected to believe everything written. For this reason alone, this book is a must avoid, but it gets worse...

Additionally, much of the wording herein is also repeated (in many cases, verbatim), within Gyatso's other books (i.e.: Transform Your Life, How To Solve Our Human Problems, Introduction to Buddhism, etc.). There is even considerable repetition contained within the presently reviewed book itself. In other words, lots of regurgitation with little in the way of new or revelatory information.

Overall, it is quite preachy ("You must..."), but Gyatso does not support his certainty on his subject matter other than to establish himself as the only authority on the subject. If you can blindly trust him and can believe only one author can cover the depth of Buddhism (as many seem to be able to do) you will end up with a rather narrow view on the subject.

Skip this oversimplified, unsubstantiated, repetitive and preachy volume and get something from mainstream Buddhist authors instead, including Dalai Lama approved sources such as the down-to-earth GUIDED MEDITATIONS ON THE STAGES OF THE PATH by Thubten Chodron, which includes 14+ hours of guided and easy-to-use meditations on an mp3 CD for about the same price, and with a forward by His Holiness (also available from Amazon).

This book is clear and easy to understand, and unlike Gyatso's self-important, claustrophobic writings, features an extensive bibliography for further reading. The CD meditations are easy to follow and delivered with extraordinary warmth, combining to yield a most effective outcome. Rest assured with the approval of His Holiness The Dalai Lama and Thubten Chodron's lucid and kind voice, you will be learning how to establish a daily meditation practice from an authentic and mainstream Buddhist.

Further recommended are titles by Yangsi Rinpoche on the subject of Lamrim meditation, also available from Amazon.

5 out of 5 stars ACTUALLY LEARN TO MEDITATE   October 12, 2006

All I have ever wanted to do was to meditate, and I have brought many meditation books, but none have been simple or even gave me any motivation to meditate.

This book provides all the knowledge and meditations that are needed to attain inner peace and is set up in a easy manner (it can be used by anyone from beginner to advanced).

The beginning of the book teaches us why and how to do basic breathing meditation.
The next part of the book explains why we should practice the 21 meditations in the book (which are really good).
Then in the next part, there are the 21 meditations for you to do. It is set out so that you can do one a day (or more if you wish).

What I really like about this book is that the 21 meditations are set out in such an easy to read manner. Each meditaiton provides a quick introduction to the meditation, then it provides the contemplation (for you to meditate on) and then the main point to focus single-pointedly on. It is THAT SIMPLE. And even better, at the end of each meditation, Geshe-Kelsang writes a paragraph as to how to put that meditaiton into practice in your daily life. Therefore, this book can be applied to one's whole life.

The meditations can take from 5 minutes to as long as you like. I work a lot of hours, therefore this book is vital to helping me develop the minds to get enlightened. Believe me, once you start those 21 meditaitons, your life will be better (as well as everyone else's).

5 out of 5 stars Great + profound book on Buddhist meditation!   September 29, 2006

This book is wonderful! Only after really working with the meditations and learning more about the Buddhist Path to Inner Happiness I understand the value of it. It is concentrated stuff, and I spend sometimes a week on one meditation, like for example the 'Precious Human Life' meditation. I found it very uplifting and practical. Some are challenging, but that is what i like about it. It is not wishy-washy, but crystal clear and to the point. I do use the ' Transfor your Life' book as well, to compliment the 21 meditations! I can just say that this book shines!
