A selection of rarities - a must to hear August 11, 2010

Yet another compilation from the BBC anxious to cash in on the insatiable demand for those who remember the Goons. Of course, you'll either like them or not, so there is no point in reviewing the Goons themselves; personally, I can't get enough!
Since the fourth series (little remains of the first three) there were nearly 150 episodes and some 125 have been repeated by the Beeb (on various channels) since the shows ended. While early cassettes/CDs contained the better known or popular shows, the later compilations now include rarer or unrepeated episodes. The great thing about this CD, for instance, is that three of the selection have never, to my knowledge, been repeated since the early days (not even on BBC7, where the complexity of copyright issues have always eluded me). This alone makes it a valuable acquisition.
So, a great opportunity to add to the collection. Arguably, none of the episodes are as good as the best perhaps, but they still contain moments of genius and typical goonery - the Terrible Revenge of Fred Fu Manchu in particular stands up well. Naturally they follow the well-established format: familiar characters, absolutely crazy plots, wonderfully imaginative sound effects and weak endings in some cases. Not all to be compared to the finest, perhaps, but this won't stop anyone who can't get enough!
I look forward to the next ten or so compilations which will bring us more of the episodes so many Goon fans won't have heard.

Another quartet of wonderful, wacky Goon Shows from the 1950s, featuring Messrs. Sellers, Secombe, and Milligan. If you've collected the previous 24 volumes--well, you've gotta have this one, which features "The Fireball of Milton Street," "The End," "The Terrible Revenge of Fred Fu-Manchu" (hardly PC, but insanely funny), and "The Internal Mountain." One note: the version of "The Internal Mountain" contained on these CDs is NOT the 1954 series 4 version as it says on the CD, but is rather the more common "Vintage Goons" re-recording of 1957. And, does anyone know the titles of the wonderful Max Geldray and Ray Ellington songs contained here? (I wish they'd put 'em on the CD liner notes!)
Somewhere up above, sitting at the bar in a pub called Heavenly Grafton's, the Goons are looking down and laughing along with us. Long may they reign!
