5 out of 5 stars Excellent book but...   March 19, 2006

I think this book is a must buy for all beginners. The opening parts about assembling the sax, embouchere, breathing and all that other stuff really are the best I've seen and I would recommend it to all newbies to the sax. My teacher raved about it.

Now for the but: if (like me) you don't know how to read music and have no experience whatsoever with any instrument, I would recommend you also buy another book for this (ie 10 Easy Lessons is good). While it does dedicate a couple of pages to music reading, I found it really didn't go into enough detail for me and it made playing the tunes that follow a bit difficult (although it is starting to make sense now that I've had a few real lessons).

So, buy this book - it really is very good - but get another one to go with it if you're a total beginner.

I loved this book and CD so much that I sought out the author and spent a few years having lessons. This is a brilliant approach and the pieces are inspired - even lesson 2 sounds like real jazz! Have no hesitation - buy it!

I must have bought every book about saxophone for beginners and this one is surely one of the best. The CD is great and the exercises are excellent.

5 out of 5 stars A note of agreement   June 16, 2004

I would like to add my voice to the praise for this book. An excellent Jazz-focussed introduction to the sax.

I agree that a follow-on book would be an excellent addition.

My only complaint (now I'm being really picky) is that the book doesn't have a little sleeve in the front to keep the CD in. As a result of not being able to keep them together, in moving house I have lost the CD!

5 out of 5 stars The ideal book for home study of sax   January 5, 2002

This book gives an excellent grounding in all the basics. It is well thought out and easy to follow. The CD is excellent. There are 69 exercises to learn and practice which will have you playing "My Little Shoes" and "Yardbird Suite" like Charlie Parker.
