All You Need To Know - Simply! December 15, 2008 M. J. Saxton (Dewsbury, West Yorkshire United Kingdom) This is a good, straightforward introduction to the genre; easy to read, but with enough information to give you a grounding in the subject. Unlike some other histories of The Musical it slips easily through the early days. Riddle explains how "The Black Crook" came to be regarded as the first musical, but also how it relates more to revue and burlesque than the musical theatre we now recognise. Early developments are also explained along with their relation to forms of theatre that later evolved without too much analysis. It is easy to understand the burgeoning of style: minstrel shows, revue, vaudeville, burlesque. Once we reach the twentieth century there is more material available. There is plenty to interest here about Rodgers and Hammerstein (including more details on style and development of their work), Lerner and Loewe, Bernstein and Sondheim, and the masterful word- and tunesmiths of the 30s. These big hitters are not the whole story and Riddle has a great deal to say about what happened besides the hits. He often summarises Broadway milestones in a way that encourages the reader to further research, with interesting snippets about how they relate, or not. Chapter 15 takes a look at the fashion for musicals based in the past in the 40s and 50s, a time when America was not very keen to examine itself in the present. He looks at related themes and how successfully these played out to audiences. Chapter 20 breaks down the types of songs which are most often used in shows, and while each type seems to be obvious, there are few of us who would have taken the time to analyse them. This is a great book for those who want to study Musical Theatre in a little more depth, more in that it tickles the curiosity by suggesting interesting areas of research, rather than handing one great swathes of information. What it does have to say is engaging and shows that there is more to the genre than just a good night at the theatre.
