Full Marks to Nicholas Oulton March 7, 2008 Bernard Wild (Colchester) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Full marks to Nicholas Oulton. In my search for a good Latin course, I have constantly been reminded of the traumatic experience of studying chemistry in the 1950s. I was thrown in the middle and had to work my way outwards - without much success. Then along came Dr Dapper who explained it all from the atom upwards, and it all fell into place. Nicholas Oulton is my Dr Dapper. With his SO YOU REALLY WANT TO LEARN LATIN course, Nicholas Oulton has catered for those people who enjoy (indeed, who can't do without) the structure and pattern of language being made clear to them from the outset. The explanations are beautifully crafted and no previous knowledge is assumed. Like john Taylor's GREEK TO GCSE, this is a return to sanity in the midst of the modern trend towards gimmicks in language teaching. Wordsearches and other facile folderol don't give an insight into structure and you will find none of them in this course. Those looking for an easy time, beware! - this ain't for you. But if you are prepared to put in the work, you will not find a better course. Oulton's SO YOU REALLY ..., like the famed fence treatment, does exactly what it says on the outside. Slap on a good dollop and open your mind.
The very best November 17, 2007 JuliaBalbilla (Winchcombe, Gloucestershire) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I am home-educating my daughter and having tried several beginner's Latin books, I have found that she is actually learning from this one. It is traditionally based with emphasis on grammar and has plenty of exercises. I wish I had had this book when I did Latin.
Not for the faint hearted September 26, 2006 Bernard M. Abel (Langley, Berks, Angleterre) 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
I got the colplete serie of N. Oughton "so, you REALLY want to learn latin", and I must say that this little book, along with vol2 and 3, just deliver what it says.. if you REALLY want to learn Latin.. you will. The book is very dense, well done and easy to use.. but it s a very intense course to go through.. lots of exercises, grammar to tackle and learn.. no easy way.. a bit like joining the Roman legions.. it s a 3 books long fast walk.. and believe me, you ll get a sweat the rule is simple.. open the book, roll up your sleeves and get ready to burn the midnight oil
Excellent self-study September 1, 2006 S. Jones (England) 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
My thirteen-year-old son is changing schools and will be learning Latin for the first time. I needed a crash course for him and haven't done Latin myself since 1974. This book was the answer. Clear, simple, concise, and packed with humour. I heartily recommend it. It has taught my son the basics quickly and painlessly, and been a brilliant refresher course for me. I am so impressed, I will be buying volumes two and three, and continuing to study this wonderful language to a higher level. Try it - if you are a serious student of Latin, you won't be disappointed.
Not as good as they say September 22, 2005 14 out of 20 found this review helpful
I took Latin as an extra subject when I was in year 10 and we used the first three 'So you really want to learn Latin' books. I found they went at a pretty quick speed but the problem was that they were so boring. The author has tried to use witty comments that completely fail and make you wonder why you decided to buy the book in the first place. Although, this book did have a rather good dictionary of simple words and verbs in the back...I wouldn't recommend it but if you're looking for a fast-pace Latin book with awful 'humour' then this is the book for you.
