5 out of 5 stars A truly stunning piece of film-making   May 4, 2008
This is, quite simply, one of the best films I have seen in the last year, and that includes Oscar winners and so-called blockbuster movies. Not only is it beautifully shot, but its fascinating blending of truth, story and memory make it truly engrossing viewing. Simon Miller shows huge promise as a director. There is nothing better currently available on DVD.

3 out of 5 stars A good movie and a very promising debut by the director.   February 28, 2008

Overall a decent movie and a good one if viewed as a childrens film. The cinematography is often excellent and some of the scenes captured in film are absolutely stunning - the director, Simon Miller, obviously has a natural talent. The story is interesting although certain bits could do with expansion. Overall the film felt maybe 10-20 minutes too short and a bit more background on Aonghas' parents and their death would have given the movie a more rounded feel. The acting is always competent, and often good, with a couple of very memorable cameo appearances by Vidal Sancho and Charles Quinnell sticking in the memory. The soundtrack is excellent and very well judged and assuming that it is released in its own right it will surely be quite popular. Overall the film is good by any standard (not just in a "it's a minority language thing so we can't say anything else" way) and hopefully the first of many we can look forward to from Miller. Oh also worth noting is the fact that the DVD contains subtitles in Irish, as well as Scottish, Gaelic as well as Welsh which is a nice little show of Celtic language solidarity.

5 out of 5 stars Gle mhath - A better film than it will ever get credit for   January 29, 2008

I was lucky enough to see this in Nottingham on Sat 26/1/08 and it was well worth the 80 mile drive.

Some of the budget restrictions can be seen e.g. the footage of the horse race is limited because filming was mostly rained off on the planned day but given the constraints the makers had to work with it's a great film with a gripping story jumping between lore and real life.

The scenery is spectacular and real and the subtitled Gaidhlig and Spanish was no problem either to me (a little Gaidhlig) or my girlfriend.

Definitely worth watching. I've already pre-ordered it.

5 out of 5 stars Sgoinneil   January 12, 2008

'S e film sgoinneil a th' ann an Seachd. Tha mi cinnteach gum biodh e cordadh riut ma tha Gaidhlig agad neo mura h-eil.

(Excellent film, enjoyable to Gaelic & non-Gaelic speakers.)

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic scenery, beautiful filming, wonderful story   January 7, 2008

I was fortunate to see this at the Vancouver Film Festival in BC this past year. It was well worth the drive up from Everett, Washington for the day. I was moved by the stories, and as a Gaelic language student, I was pleased by how much I managed to get of the dialogue without the English subtitles. I would highly recommend this film not just for Gaelic students, but for anyone with an interest in Gaelic culture and the stories of the Highlands and Islands.

Truly a wonderful experience!
