truely helpful! February 23, 2010 K. Brockbank (Salisbury UK) I bought this for myself but my 17 year old daughter quickly found a very good use for it for her A'level studies. This is the final in a series and, having listened to it all, I am tempted to buy the earlier versions as occasionally Michel Thomas mentions things he has spoken about in earlier lessons (for example he talks about 'the long and short box' which means nothing to me. M Thomas has a lovely French accent and his two students are excellent sidek-kicks, neither too cocky or inept they are excellent students! I have tried other language courses but this is by far the best.
Remarkable October 29, 2009 Mr. Robin J. Linacre (London) The Michel Thomas tapes are absolutely fantastic. When you listen to his claims at the start of the course - that you will learn easily, without remembering, without homework - you think it's just another bogus claim to try and set the course apart from any other French method.
Having completed the courses I think these claims are actually largely accurate. Admittedly, you have to put a lot of hard work in, and listen to each tape a number of times before it sinks in, but he's right. He teaches grammar and vocabulary in a clear and clever way.
It's obvious that many hours of preparation and thought have been put in to the tapes to try and help you learn in the fastest way possible. This is the main way these courses differ from other "learn French" tapes which just make you listen and repeat lots of French phrases. Michel explains what works and why and makes up phrases to jog your memory.
The best resource I have found for learning French (and I've used many, including the Rosetta Stone, Pimsleur, grammar drill books, reading kid's books in French). Highly recommended.
Builds on the Foundation Course. August 29, 2009 S Smyth (Belfast, Co Antrim United Kingdom) This item will suit those with some knowledge of French, especially those who have some knowledge of French, via the Foundation Course, since it pretty much picks up where the Foundation Course, left off.
The content moves along at a fair clip, which is helped by having two students of good ability, and not a pair of students with one much better than the other, since even though the less able student, may be no less able than oneself, one needs to concentrate on the proceedings, and can do with feeling positively challenged instead of distracted and/or discouraged. A rising tide which lifts all boats :-).
Most of the focus is on grammatical structure and how to express oneself in complexities of tenses. As pointed out at the end, the learner will have to supplement this course with vocabulary, and French specific expressions which do not lend themselves to being formulated from English into French (as would be the case for French speakers learning English). It is also useful to have the additional booklet and the review disk.
Learners should consider joining a 'meetup group'. These can be found by Googling, Binging, etc., for: french meetup London, Glasgow, Edinburgh, Belfast, etc., etc. The Belfast and Edinburgh meetups have speakers from novice to native, so one can get to practice and/or improve their French, in a casual environment.
