This+Italian Dictionary=Success August 15, 2010 Crow Jane (Essex, England) I concur with the glowing reviews about this audio CD, but I won't go on because other customers have already done a sterling job covering all its good points -- and there are a lot. I just wanted to mention one or two things.
Firstly, to get the best out of this language course I think it's essential to purchase a good Italian dictionary alongside it. I know this will bunk up the cost, and some might think my advice is redundant given Michel Thomas' revolutionary method of teaching, but if you want to have a little more control over what you want to learn and what you want to say, etc. then I would thoroughly recommend it. Even more so if you're worried you might not be able to get by on holiday after completing the course (see less glowing reviews for details). The fact is that yes you will (and then some) if you take some extra time to study a dictionary. After all, the CD teaches you how to put sentences together and covers the rules regarding masculine and feminine, plural and so on, so it's easy to replace the words and verbs that you learn with the ones that you actually want. It's also nice to know how to spell the words you learn as it gives you greater flexibility when using the language. For example, I wouldn't have been confident enough to write in Italian using the Michel Thomas CD alone.
Secondly, I think it's OK to take notes if need be. I'm not new to language study (French and German the long-winded way), so I didn't struggle to grasp the lessons, but I found that it was nice to just go over a few notes when I didn't want to refer to the CDs, and also to practise constructing my own sentences using the dictionary. Michel Thomas said that what the brain knows it cannot forget, but nothing sticks in my mind like the written word, so it worked for me. That said, some of the credit must go to my penpal, Carlo -- you'll be surprised what you can learn from a like-minded native!
All things considered, this is still the fastest route to language study I have ever encountered, so it richly deserves its five stars.
It really is the best! January 29, 2010 AUSTEN FEITELSON-SMART (Milan) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Ciao a tutti
First and foremost I must start this review by saying, I never leave reviews for anything - quite honestly I am one of those people (and there are a lot of us out there) who just reads the reviews that others make but never bother to write my own, however the Michel Thomas Italian CD has for the first time forced me to leave one!
2-3 months ago, I moved to Milan for work, and quite honestly I have been struggling with the language since the move. It is true full immersion is the best way to learn, but I am not a linguist and whilst I picked up a lot of words, I learnt to count, I learnt the days of the week etc, I did not understand how to use them properly and in structured sentences.
Before I moved I bought 2 other CD's, which were good in there own right (for a holiday etc) but they just did not seem to sink in. Finally I bought the Michel Thomas CD and after only listening to the first CD, I must say my Italian has dramatically improved.
This morning I came into the office and said in Italian 'I am sorry but I want to know why it is not acceptable for you like this because it is, very good' I received many 'complementi' from the staff here!
Trust me, it may be slightly more than the others but it is well worth it.
Just be aware however; if your going on holiday for 2 weeks, it's probably not the best thing for you, you won't learn how to count, buy bread or book into a hotel, but if you want to learn the language, and know how to use it, how to use the verbs etc then buy this.
Whatever you decide to do, you are reading this because you want to learn Italian, so good luck!
Ciao
very good, user-friendly introduction January 25, 2010 Mr. Ian A. Macfarlane (Fife, Scotland) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
As others have said, this will get you started in Italian - there will be a lot more to do afterwards if you want to become really fluent and use the language effectively. Having said that, the question-and-answer method and the careful use of repetition and enforcement provide a very simple and attractive way of getting the basics of what is, in some ways, a difficult language. We found it the best way to start - painless, easy to use, and genuinely helpful. On that basis, recommended.
Michel Thomas December 27, 2009 Ms. R. M. Henry A brilliant man, teaching me Italian and me getting it... What a way to learn a language hooray How sad I only found out about him so recently, and what a hero he was in his life to boot.
Excellent December 3, 2009 Blanco (UK) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I left school 30 yrs ago having spent the previous 5 years trying and failing to get to grips with the 'O' level French language classes that we were forced to suffer. Having read a lot about Michel Thomas's method (not least in Amazon's customer reviews) I decided to give the Italian foundation course a chance and I am thoroughly enjoying it.
I had intended to play the discs in the car while travelling to and from work but I gave that up straight away, others may find that a perfectly acceptable way to learn but I'm afraid It just wasn't for me, learning a language took all my concentration.
I'm half way through the 8 disc course and already feel that my command of the Italian language is so much better than my French ever was, however, I have taken things very slowly, sometimes taking up to 2 hours to get through 30 minutes of the disc, and then going back over the course from the start on completion of the fourth disc as I felt that I was struggling to remember some of the basics. To my surprise I found that I flew through the discs the second time around and now I'm really looking forward to the rest of the course......in summing up, no! it's not painless learning but if you're prepared to put a bit of effort in you could be really pleased with the results...I can't wait for next year's holiday to Sorrento....oh! by the way my wife goes to fitness classes a couple of times a week which means that I've got peace and quiet for a couple of hours at a stretch...priceless!
