Typical quality teaching and clarity of method August 25, 2010 Dr Johnson (UK) All of the original Michel Thomas courses (French, German, Spanish and Italian) are worth trying, assuming his method suits your way of learning. I've used all four... to revitalise my schoolboy French and German, and to learn Italian and Spanish from scratch. I always find I have to relearn them all from time to time, as there just aren't enough hours in the day to pursue my foreign language interests as much as I'd like, but it always amazes me how much of Michel's teaching sticks in my brain. I can't speak for the newer courses (created since Michel died).
So, assuming you get on with Michel's method, I have to say this is probably the weakest of the four standard-level sets. Or rather, it's the most frustrating, because the male student droid (all Michel Thomas courses feature two students on the CDs, learning with you) is just so utterly hopeless. Far too much of the time is wasted while Michel has to repeat basic information. I can see why they did this, because the repetition helps us all, but in this case, I think it's too much. I ended up scanning through those sections. Still, that's a minor criticism... it's hard to find too many faults with any of these courses.
getting past ordering beer August 21, 2010 Gerardo The course was excellent - I'm going 'round it for the second time now. As Michel (may he RIP) says, he builds up the structure of the language. I can now think logically how to say various items and, if I don't remember, I can work it out. His method of using the two students works well, occasionally I worked out the correct phrase ahead of them and felt good shouting out the answer. Last year I purchased the French advanced course, liked it, and so was confident buying the Spanish beginners' course - and so it has turned out.
Michel Thomas Spanish August 20, 2010 DavidJones For anyone wishing to learn a language without having to trawl through endless textbooks, there is no better way to learn. I started using Michel Thomas CD's about 3 years ago and the speed that one learns is astonishing. After studying French at school for 5 years, many years ago !, I found that after completing the foundation course of 8 discs and then the advanced course of 4 discs, my grammatical knowledge of Spanish was far better than my French.
One has to be prepared to put the time in though, there is no quick fix here. Like anything, it takes time to grasp things and over time, once proficient, one moves on to the next disc and constantly reviews what one has studied before. I found that by having these recordings on my i-pod and in my car that time usually wasted when walking to and from the station etc were now utilised with short sharp bursts of learning that is actually a really good way to learn.
Be aware that the CD's have Michel teaching 2 students and from time to time their mistakes can be a bit frustrating but its a unique way to learn as you feel that you are in the classroom with them learning from their mistakes whilst thinking it through and using your pause button.
I would recommend Michel Thomas to any beginner and to those that have studied before, go for the advance discs for a fantastic way of revising your grammatical structure in such an easy way. Once you have learned in this way, you will not forget it.
Just ok August 5, 2010 Jen I bought this set of cds when starting out learning spanish a few years ago.
I have used other courses since and in comparison, this one is a disappointment.
well, not that bad maybe, but its quite painful the way he drags out the teaching.
Also, it was pointed out to me by some spaniards that he uses some spanish words that don't even exist.
He is not a native spanish speaker himself so you are not getting a genuine spanish pronunciation of words.
Personally, I think there are better products out there.
Not without its frustrations April 11, 2010 The Casual Passer By (Cumbria UK) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I learned Spanish at school many years ago so I had a bit of a head start with the MT 8 CDs.
As many other have pointed out there are parts of this course that may drive you to distraction. I shall say PUEDE and leave you to discover for yourself. And MT over does the accent/emphasis sometimes, actually nearly all the time.
However, I have learned such a lot by persevering with the set. I think that if I had been taught like this at school I would have found Spanish more interesting and rewarding and more fun.
MT teaches you sentence structure with a minimum of nouns. His technique for teaching verb conjugation was for me much easier. By the end of cd 8 you may have trouble saying "The green pencil is on the blue table by the yellow window." But you will be able to say "I am sorry but it is not acceptable for me like that and I am going to need it tomorrow.." which I think is more useful.
You can then go on to learn the vocabulary that suits your situation or immediate need without having to fill your head with such phrases as "What time is the next train to Vladivostok?" or "How much are your Aubergines?"
If you are looking to learn Spanish on the cheap then this is a very good place to start. But it is not without its frustrations. Do it then find a tutor.
