Learning French September 1, 2010 ALISON (Essex) I already speak a little French but this set of DVDs will be very useful in helping me to learn more.
Michel Thomas French August 20, 2010 DavidJones For anyone wishing to learn a language without having to trawl through endless textbooks, there is no better way to learn. I started using Michel Thomas Spanish CD's about 3 years ago and the speed that one learns is astonishing. After studying French at school for 5 years, many years ago !, I found that after completing the foundation course of 8 discs and then the advanced course of 4 discs, my grammatical knowledge of Spanish was far better than my French.
Hence I started the Michel Thomas French 2 years ago and I've found that Michel makes it so straight forward. There's no parrot fashion, repetative verb table nonsense.
One has to be prepared to put the time in though, there is no quick fix here. Like anything, it takes time to grasp things and over time, once proficient, one moves on to the next disc and constantly reviews what one has studied before. I found that by having these recordings on my i-pod and in my car that time usually wasted when walking to and from the station etc were now utilised with short sharp bursts of learning that is actually a really good way to learn.
Be aware that the CD's have Michel teaching 2 students and from time to time their mistakes can be a bit frustrating but its a unique way to learn as you feel that you are in the classroom with them learning from their mistakes whilst thinking it through and using your pause button.
I would recommend Michel Thomas to any beginner and to those that have studied before, go for the advance discs for a fantastic way of revising your grammatical structure in such an easy way. Once you have learned in this way, you will not forget it.
Michel is good but a bit of a misogynist! August 19, 2010 E. Jarvis (London) Michel Thomas's appproach to language teaching is very clever - he had my husband and 9 year old stepdaughter speaking a few lines of French after the first hearing.
On the recording, he works with a woman and a man and I am not the first person to remark that he is very critical and patronising to the woman.
If you can overcome that - it isn't all bad.
Michel Thomas is outstanding... @nlbyrn August 16, 2010 Noel28 (London) I have only good things to say about Michel Thomas - his work is outstanding and has reopened the door to learning languages for me, which I considered closed after my experiences with French at school. I have to just say something about Hodder and Stoughton though; their naming conventions and labelling of the audio CDs are absolutely terrible. You may only notice this when you put them on your MP3 player, for instance CDs are labelled "French Course: [Disk 3]", "French [Disk 8]", tracks are sometimes listed by number: 01, 02, 03... sometimes by subject: "Not Staying", "I am busy", "Je Mange" etc... You may think I'm splitting hairs but this is a well-established publisher. I couldn't find CD 4 of this course on my iPod, thinking I had omitted to rip it in iTunes I popped it back in my computer to find Hodder have called it "French Course: [Disk 5]". Oh silly me...
Easy French. July 27, 2010 Mrs. D. Wallington (liverpool uk) This is French without tears! In the beginning of the book Michel Thomas tells us we are not aware of the amount of French we know already, how right he is, we are using the French language almost daily. I found his method very easy to follow. Some reviewers have said they find the students annoying, I didn't, I found that when they made a mistake or wrong pronunciation this helped to show me I was not dumb for getting a word wrong, just normal. Although this is basic level French it will help you to get by on holiday and maybe encourage you to go to the next stage. I thoroughly enjoyed this cd and feel I can go back to it at any time especially prior to the next trip to France.
