It was a happy day indeed when I found this little gem! September 20, 2008 Cartimand (Hampshire, UK.) 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
Children of the Stones is a classic example of edgy and thought-provoking drama aimed at young people but intelligent enough to appeal to everyone. Its compelling plot and eerie atmosphere places COTS firmly up there with the likes of the marvellous Owl Service and Noah's Castle. Furthermore, set against the hugely evocative backdrop of the Avebury stone circle (and a few shots around West Kennet long barrow and Silbury hill) and with such accomplished actors as Gareth Thomas and the masterful Iain Cuthbertson, COTS is an uniquely satisfying experience. I loved it when I first watched it as a young teenager and loved it today! All seven episodes are presented in excellent picture quality and clear, but obviously mono, sound. The soundtrack includes some decidedly creepy chants and moans from the "Ambrosia Singers". The bonus interviews are both enlightening and entertaining. Only possible criticism is that the conclusion is rather enigmatic and provides more questions than answers, but I can happily live with that and it's fun to speculate on the implications of that last scene! Go on - treat yourself to 3 hours of classic TV heaven!
Buy it, buy it now! August 25, 2008 Mr. M. Leacy (Reading, UK) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
If you're a fan of Sci-fi/fantasy series, then this is a must. Made for Children's TV but the quality far surpasses the genre. The story is top notch and the whole feel of the piece is magical. A truly haunting story and some fantastic plot developments make this the best British Sci-fi series ever produced. Every episode is great, but the final episode provides an absolutely corking climax - both shocking and thrilling. On watching this scene my jaw hit the floor - I was expecting it to be a disappointing end as so many series suffer the fate. This does not disappoint. Oh just buy it!
A charming piece of television July 14, 2008 J. D. O. Sullivan (Cork, Ireland) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I had never seen this series but took a chance on it based on others reviews; I was pleasantly suprised with the result. Granted it has dated and some of the production is on the cheap side (when the villian's seat swivels you can see his knees moving) but this is part of the charm. The score is brilliant and complements the claustrophobic atmosphere, and unlike childrens series today, it is witty and does not condescend but rather introduces some novel and thoughtful ideas (e.g. at what point do you become responsible for another's actions, thought control, etc.). Well worth it, treat yourself.
Nostalgia Treat June 3, 2008 B. M. Bush (London) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
Difficult for me to write an objective review of this one - it brings back memories of a summer holiday in Wiltshire during the 1976 heatwave, and then watching the scariest thing I'd seen on TV the next year. Much more memorably frightening than Dr Who. Viewing it now, the music is still distinctly creepy and the general plot of mystery and loss of more & more villagers to the "happy-dayers" makes for a very good drama. Some nice interviews for the DVD extras as well. The acting is a bit flakey at times, and the ending which could be called enigmatic and thought-provoking is really more muddled and meaningless. But its a dvd thats well worth watching - especially for those with fond memories of watching the programmes back in the 70s.
Oh dear........ April 27, 2008 Sizzle (UK) 4 out of 8 found this review helpful
I can appreciate how this DVD may work for those who watched the TV series when it first came out as nostalgia does tend to provide rose tinted spectacles. However, coming into this "cold", I found it to be pretty much a waste of time. The acting is pretty wooden & the plot takes an age to reach its inevitable & obvious conclusion. If you're looking for this a better example of 1970's tv series fiction, try Survivors - much better & alot more compelling.
