Good December 17, 2008 WBF Kitchener (UK) Dont worry what Richard and Judy recommend, read what you like, I read this without reading anyone's comments and I thought it was a good book
an easy read November 11, 2008 Barbbro2000 (Dublin) I enjoyed this book, even though the most provocative thing about is the title. But sometimes, it's enjoyable to read a book that doesn't tax the mind too much, and allows us space away from thinking. It is predictable, it is trite, but it's also a good easy read. Real holiday book.
A big disappointment November 1, 2008 g. smeaton I bought this book because I could recall hearing its title somewhere and thought from the blurb it sounded like it could be interesting, I was sadly wrong. The plot is so predictable and I felt lacked any depth or substance. The characters are so shallow that they're impossible to like, especially the daughter- Megan. I actually felt quite uncomfortable about the authors need to hammer home the point that megans's a beautiful young girl who can have any guy she wants obsessing over her despite being as deep as a puddle and a lot (though not all) of the details of her sexual antics do come across as unnecessary to the story and plain gratuitous (which when you consider i'm a 19 year old girl myself really is saying something) The whole plot is like that really. There are none of the subtle hints and suggestions of most murder mysteries-the author seems to feel the need to hammer every point in, there are no twists and no turns in the plot and the characters are so flimsy that you don't even really care by the end of it who did do it.
great tale of obsession August 2, 2008 UK reader (Nr Manchester, UK) I seem to be one of few who actually enjoyed this book! I was gripped from the start and found the book an easy read. I liked the reflections back and forth, especially the recounting of Diana's disasterous day (which ultimately led to her being murdered). Megan was an interesting character - studious and bright yet a bit of a heartbreaker. Some commented that the relationship between Megan and Huck was uncalled for - I didn't find it too distracting although I did wonder the extent to which you can turn up on a local detective's doorstep and seduce him (perhaps you can in small town America?!). I did guess who the murderer was but I didn't find that it ruined my read of the novel - just made me more intrigued how it occured and how it was explained. I would recommend this novel - perhaps a poolside read or a quick read on the journey to work (although one of my fellow train travellers did give me an odd look - guess it was the title)? I have just bought "Crazy like Chocolate" by Elisabeth Hyde on the back of reading this.
The Abortionist's Daughter- not for everyone. May 18, 2008 Sunnie Gill (Tasmania, Australia) At first I thought I wasn't going to enjoy THE ABORTIONIST'S DAUGHTER. It seemed to be more about family relationships than murder. However it didn't take long to discover that the family dynamics help inform the murder investigation. THE ABORTIONIST'S DAUGHTER is written on a number of levels. First and foremost is the murder of Diana and the investigation. We learn the family's back-story and what happened to bring them to this point in time. It is also an exploration of an extremely emotive issue from both sides of the argument into which is cleverly woven a theme of the nature of obsession and what it can do to people. THE ABORTIONIST'S DAUGHTER is not going to be everyone's cup of tea. There are many who may find parts of the book offensive and many more who will be upset by it. Hyde has written three other novels; each examining different aspects of family relationships. Her website is http://www.elisabethhyde.com/
