Good read, enjoyed the story line. January 1, 2009 Shelley Peace This was the first time I had read a James Herbert book and was not sure what to expect. The book is approx 650 pages and i found in parts it went into too finer detail which was unnecessary. I warmed to the characters and would defintley read another James Herbert book. Some parts were gripping and others parts a bit boring. There's a twist to the end of the story and i found the ending to be a bit predictable. But above all that I would recommend this book.
Brilliant Read December 10, 2008 Joanne Mcbride (Boroughbridge) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
I absolutely loved this book so much I didn't want it to end. I tried to read a little at a time, but wanting to read more also, but reading more meant that the book would soon come to an end. Hope there will be more like this.
Do you believe in ghosts? October 24, 2008 C. White (Hertfordshire, UK) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
This starts off as an almost gentle little ghost story with an average family dealing with their own tragedy. And quite likeable it is with Herbert brilliantly describing details that bring the locations & characters alive. Then, halfway through the novel, it takes on a darker, more sinister & in many ways, deeply disturbing track. The central family are pushed to the background and we are confronted by some horrific images. I sometimes feel that Herbert pushes the limits just a little too far, maybe that's what helps him stand out as he does. If nothing else, this is a compulsive page-turner that builds brilliantly to a breathtaking climax.
a rose by any other name..... September 20, 2008 Liza P (UK) 1 out of 5 found this review helpful
......is still a rose so they say well to my mind the same goes for paedophilia!! this book glories in sado-masochism and sex between adults and by young children (Oh a few ghosts thrown in as a nod to the genre). Horror yes but not in the accepted way, If it were written by any other author it would be slated and rightly for perversion.
Things That Go Bump in the Night September 3, 2008 Omac 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
This is the first James Herbert that I ever bought and I wasnt sure what to think about it. It follows the Caleigh family, who after tradgic events, move to Crickley Hall to start a new life. But what they find is a series of hauntings, open cellar doors, strange banging, puddles on the floor and dancing dust children. The story was too long to keep you scared and the slow paced start makes it a three star. The story of the orpahns and the last 200 pages save it from being any worse. Overall this is a pretty average book which is worth a read if you dont have to pay to much for it.
