3 out of 5 stars Not King's best   June 24, 2008
L. Young (Stockton, UK)
Most of the Stephen King books I have read I have loved, with the exception of The Dark Tower series and the Dark Half. I didn't hate The Regulators, in fact found it engaging and frightening in some aspects, but thought it often seemed to be rushed and confused. Maybe this was an intentional move on Kings part, getting the reader to feel like the characters under siege, but it didn't work too well.

I thought Seth and Tak could have been more developed, although I must admit the thought of 'Seths' grin gave me shivers, and found many of the characters to be too two dimensional, something that rarely happens in King's (or indeed Bachmans) works.

It had a good story but I wished it was better fleshed out and explained instead of the odd extract at the end of each chapter and a dialogue between Audrey and Johnny.

Not rubbish but definately not Kings best, I hope Desperation is better.

was brilliant listened in car great narration great story quite graphic grusome bits but a real must for sci fi lovers

1 out of 5 stars Waste of time - please avoid   April 24, 2006

This has to be one of The Master's poorest efforts, and I say that as a dyed-in-the-wool Constant Reader. In comparison with earlier works, this is slow, disjointed, silly and contains no characters that you will remotely give a damn about - really disappointing that, when one of King's strengths has always been his uncanny ability to create characters that you feel strongly about.

If I could have given it less than 1 star I would have.

2 out of 5 stars A bit of a drag   April 20, 2006

Inspite of this being apparently by R Bachman you can tell this is Steven King after a short time, just by the style of writing.
The story itself is not bad but I feel is marred by the long periods of reverie given to many of the characters. On top of this are the diary entries of Audrey Wyler so that it becomes a real drag. I must admit I skipped all these sections and still followed the plot. In some ways the story reminds me of Dream Catcher, as this also involves possesion of people by and alien intruder. Also like that book it involves a boy with mental difficulties, who also happens to have untapped powerful abilities. Where Dream catcher was fast paced and exciting though The Regulators was just ok, and not one I'll be reading again.

3 out of 5 stars Potty Mouth attacks again   August 22, 2005
B. Chandler (Arlington, Texas)
This item would probably not have been published if Stephen King had not hit the big time with his other novels. This is a loose collection of mostly obscenities and nasties with a little gore to glue it together. It appears to be a test project for future novels.
I will not go too much into detail as each incidence relies on surprise. However we start out with a normal small town. Bizarre events eventually turn into a surrealistic nightmare. People are trapped in a twilight zone type of atmosphere and the question is if anyone will survive? It does not look possible.
